2008 Craftsman Closeout Tractors
I have a little program on this website called “Psychic Search” that lets me know what you search for on this site and don’t find. Many of you are looking for the 2008 closeout mowers. You have read all of last year’s reviews and realize that some of the 2008′s are good mowers and that Sears sells the previous year’s leftovers in the spring of the next year at some great discounts.
Here is a list of the 2008 models. Click on the model number to go to Sears to see if the model is still available in your area. At the Sears site be sure and put in your zip code and click on the “check availability” button to see if they are still available in your area.
Note: If the link doesn’t take you to the Sears site, or give you an “Sorry, we are having trouble locating a match for” that model is completely gone.
Disclaimer: I tried to match the 2008 models to the 2009 tractors. Some of the matches to the 2009 tractors on my list may not be exact. Sears streamlined the 2009 mower line and improved the mowers a lot, so some of the 2008 models do not have 2009 equivalents.

How about “Gold” color ?
Sears had a Special Edition 80 Year Anniversary model in Gold.
I believe it was a DYS 4500 (28738) with 22HP V Intek Twin engine and 42″ cut. Does that sound right ?
@S…K…,
The DYS 4500 had a twin but I don’t remember the hp and 42 inch deck. The DYS 3500 had a 46 inch deck
Dear Sir
A Sears saleman told me yesterday that the Craftsman lawn mowers were color-coded to indicate their relative quality. This refers not to the engine color but to the base of the mower itself.
* Gray indicates “economy” model;
* Red indicates medium quality;
* Black indicates their best quality (short of professional).
Are you familiar with this color coding? Or was the salesman in error? Thanks.

@alan,
Yes but,
Riding Mowers
Gray = economy, pressurized splash oil system with oil filter. The standard Briggs motor your Dad trusted for years.
Red = I call this the homeowner model. For most of you this mower is exactly what you need to mow your lawn and do light landscaping chores. They cut well and will give you years of dependable service. Upgraded Briggs/Kohler motor. Pressurized pump oil system with filter.
Black = Garden Tractors. Kohler Courage (consumer) motor.
Black/Yellow = Extra features like electric clutch, heavier gauge deck, commercial Briggs ELS motor, larger tires than red models, free front bumper. Generally worth the extra money IF you want to spend it.
Push Mowers
Black = Deluxe. Have the newest and best features. STAY AWAY FROM LIMITED EDITION MODELS. The limited edition models are made by MTD and don’t have the features the other mowers have.
Red = Normal homeowner. The same mower and Briggs motor you have used for years.
Gray = They also sell these at K=Mart – enough said. If you buy a gray push mower ALWAYS buy the Protection Plan.
Yellow = I don’t like any of the professional walk-behind mowers and are made by MTD. For example the professional with the caster wheels will not back up – it only goes forward. A stupid design that only MTD would try and market.
String trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, chain saws
Yellow = Pretty close to commercial grade
Black = Upgraded Red Models
Red = Normal homeowner models
Gray = economy
Tools are color coded differently.
