Craftsman YT 4000 Model 28925
Craftsman has simplified the model numbers this year and the YT4000 series only come with Briggs & Stratton 24 hp Platinum V twin engines. The model 28925 features a 6 speed transmission, the new Craftsman style, step through operator’s platform, 24 hp V-twin engine, and a 42 inch deck redesigned around the 46 inch Model 28724 Consumer Reports 2008 Best Buy.
If you want a decent mower that will mow 1 to 2 acres lawns well and and handle a snow thrower well this is the cheapest mower in the Craftsman lineup that I would recommend for you.
Specs:
Six speed transmission
24 hp V-twin Briggs & Stratton Platinum Series Full Pressure Engine with oil filter. This mower is is incorrectly listed on the Sears.com website as 22 hp. It is actually a 24 hp.
42 inch precision cut with 4 gauge wheels. Spring loaded deck lift system. Washout port on deck.
Cast iron front axle.
High-back seat with automotive type slide seat system
2 year warranty (manufacture defects only), 5 year frame/front axle, optional 3 yr Protection Agreement (covers all of the lawn tractor including wear and tear, labor, and attachments bought with the mower)
Pros:
I like the mid-size YT 4000 series. I think they represent a good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time.
These yard tractors are capable of handling all the non-ground engaging attachments Sears offers including a snow blade and snow thrower. Click here to see the full line of Sears attachments.
Hauling Equipment: Yes
Lawn Care Attach: Yes
Craftsman 2 bin bagger: 24891
Craftsman 3 bin bagger: 24892
Mulch Kit: 33742
Craftsman Tractor Deck Wash Kit: 33167
Snow Blade: 24441 This blade will mount to your tractor WITHOUT removing the deck.
Craftsman 42 in. Lawn Tractor Snow Thrower 24838 I also recommend you purchase wheel weights and tire chains.
Optional High Traction Snow Blade: 07124428000. This blade does not get too much publicity because it is designed to fit on many different brands including Craftsman, John Deere, and Cub Cadet. It will take you longer to attach the blade, but the way it mounts puts the pushing force on the BACK of the tractor. This type of mounting gives you much more pushing power than all the front mount blades. You will have to remove your deck to use this blade.
Cons:
The YT 4000 is powerful enough if you want to attach a snow thrower, but it is not a garden tractor and is not designed to handle ground engaging attachments. Most homeowners don’t use attachments like pull-behind tillers, plows and the YT4000 will be just the right size. The GT 5000 garden tractors will handle a snow thrower better than this one, they are almost twice the cost.
There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it is a good quality mid-sized mower designed to mow lawns well. I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for. It is capable of pulling a wide range of attachments.
After you use your new mower for a while, come back and tell us how well you like your Craftsman YT 4000 Six-speed!

Question… I bought a 2010 YT4000 last year witht he 3 year protection plan but when I call sears, they tell me it doesn’t cover wear and tear as you have listed above…. is there a secret code word or something…. I have had nothing but problems with my tractor since I got it. Sear has been little to no help except for the repair man showing up (3 times so far). Can you offer some direction on this as I think my deck is WAY out of wack and everytime I attempt to realign, it just gets worse….. Thanks!!
@Seamus, Sorry for the delay. I have been busy building a couple of raised garden beds.
Physical abuse is not covered, but wear and tear is.
Call Sears service at 1-800-4MY-HOME and request a tech. Don’t ask the operator if something is covered because in my opinion an operator sitting in some huge room in Flagstaff, Des Moines or even another country can’t troubleshoot your problem or even make a determination on what’s covered.
If the tech doesn’t fix your mower properly call again and ask for “seasoned tech” They will send someone else.
By the way, if the tech shows up again for the same problem a 4th time and doesn’t get it fixed, your protection plan offers that you get another mower. (Read your protection plan document for the exact wording)
One way to quickly get someone to help you is to go to mysears.com and tell your story in the Discussion Boards. These are monitored closely by Sears and they WILL get your problem looked into and resolved.
I would level the deck by: Drop it to 1. If it is not completely on the ground use a few pieces of wood (all the same size) to hold the deck stable. Then go through the procedure in your manual and level the deck. Make sure your tire pressure is even before your start.
Thanks Paul. This has been the most help I have gotten since I bought the tractor. I will follow all your recommendations and let you know.
I really appreciate this!!
I havejust purchased craftsman YT4000 riding lawqn mower. Our church originally had an old craftsman riding lawn mower and it was getting too old for the job so I had bought a new craftsman riding lawn mower for them. The first one lasted about 11yrs.The last we bought about 6yrs ago and is still being used. Our personal lawn mower(yard man)we have had is about 5yrs old and is starting to give us trouble.Sears had a good deal on riding lawn mowers this memorial day. Our grass area about 2 acres and hilly, bumpy and screwy. I was determined to stay away from the hydrostatic transmission.I figured I didnt need it.
Hi all,
I am thinking about buying a YT4000 model 28925. I am looking to replace my 12 year old Ariens mower. My old mower is 13.5 HP and it has a 40 inch deck. I am sure with a 24 HP motor and a 42 inch deck I should be very happy with the power of the unit.
I have always used hydro drive mowers but, I am thinking that the 6 speed tranny will hold up better to the hilly lawn and the use of a cart I pull behind the mower. Can any one share an opinion on the 6 speed tranny? I read a few reviews that noted the gear tranys cause the front mower to jump into the air when placed in gear. Is that true? Is it also true that if the mower blades are turning and the break is depressed it will cause the mower to turn off?
Thanks
@ Rob,
The techs tell me that the hydro units are stronger today than the six speed models. They have fewer service calls on them. You won't have problems with the hydro on a hilly lawn and I myself prefer a hydro because it allows you to change your speed easier while on the hill.
Some people rev the motor all the way ………… put it in a high gear ………….. and then let out on the clutch and complain that it is jumping…… hmmmm.
Thanks for the info/links.Gator blades,I have them on my old Lowes mower, great blades. Will let you know what I get when I make up my feeble mind.
Thanks much
Thanks Paul.
Might as well pick one up rather than pay delivery. I am thinking strongly about getting the PYT 9000 model 28970. On your review you give the mulch kit as 33742. Cant find it on sears site. Number wrong? Any other sales coming up?
If picked up how much will the store put together?
Thanks much
@Bill, I like the 28970. It is worth the extra money over the 28922, 28926 or 28927.
For some reason Sears has dropped the 42 inch mulch kit from Sears.com. Most likely they are out of stock. You can order the just the mulch plug from SearsPartsDirect. Click on the searspartsdirect banner on the right side of the screen and type this Part No. 198383.
Use the blades that came on your mower or order these
Craftsman 42 in. Advanced Mulching and Bagging Blade Set
for a really great cut.
Deals… They have an extra $25 off when you order online. There is also a 5% cash back OR no interest/no payments until Jan 2010.
Here is the ink to order it.
Craftsman Professional PYT 9000 Model 28970 24 HP 42 inch Yard Tractor

The store will have your mower ready to mow. It will be assembled including putting the bumper on. (Though I have heard of a couple of stores getting the bumper on upside down.:) All you have to do is put gas in it. The battery may not have enough charge to start it the first time so you may have to jump it or charge the battery with a battery charger.
The 28970 will fit in a regular pickup but bring a couple of straps to tie it securely. When the store personnel load it make sure the transmission release rod is pushed in. That will keep the tractor from rolling around. If you want to read the owners manual before you get the tractor click on the "mower manuals" link in the right hand column and type craftsman 28970 in the search box.
Let me know what you order and I'll go through the details of using the mower for you.
Thanks
NOTE: If you have the mower delivered it will have the deck attached. New for 2009, if you have gas available, the delivery guys will also start the mower and show you how to use it.
In Columbia MO. the salesman states this is only done in bigger cities,St.Louis,etc.
@Bill,
In one of the comments I stated that even though Sears.com and the TV commercials advertise the free start up and training, it only applies to stores that have their own delivery crews. The small store I shop at in EauClaire, WI contracts their delivery and the free set-up does not apply.
The store will attach your 54 inch deck, but you have to ask them to do it. Between you and me if you read the section in the owner's manual on deck installation,……………. then reading the manual a second time as you do the work, you can easily attach the deck yourself in about 15 minutes.
