I am going to recommend the 28934. Single cylinder Kohler, 42 inch deck, and foot control hydro.
The 28934 with the Kohler is a great mower. It has lots of torque for your hills. It has less vibration than the Briggs singles (better internal counter-balancer) and a foot control which will be easier for your 16 year old to learn and use. (It has cruise control!) The Kohler will give you better fuel economy than the twins.
Fender control is for the old guys who learned on one or a person with limited ankle movement. Everyone else will like the foot control. I say if you learned to drive a car before a mower go with the foot control, if your last mower was a fender control (and you liked it) stick with it.
With a 42 inch deck the three bag will stick out the sides of the mower more than the deck does. If you were only going to use it occasionally for leaves I would say get the three bagger, but if you will be using it all the time you will like the two bagger better because your son won’t be running into things as much (like trees, bushes, the house)
The Briggs singles do have more vibration than the twins, but I am also seeing the 46 inch decks seem to have more vibration than the 42′s. No matter what Sears says, the gear drives are jerky and you will have to replace belts more often than the hydro’s.
The twins are nice and for your application you can’t go wrong with the 24 hp 42 inch. But it’s overkill.

@Mark, I pretty sure the Ariens name is owned by Ariens. They also own Gravely®, EverRide®, Great Dane®, Gravely® Turf, National® Mower, Locke®, Stens® and Bynorm®But they do farm out a lot of their production and that one is easily a Husqvarna made product.

@mark, It looks like most of the tractors from all the manufactures will be getting EPA changes for next year. So they are selling off current stock and not replenishing it like they usually do. Everyone is busy making and distributing snowblowers right now so if you can’t find one at your local store…………..Comparable models are the Husqvarna YTH21K46. That has a 21 hp Kohler single, the YTH22V46 with 22 hp Briggs and the YT4000 model 28927 Craftsman. That has a 24 hp Briggs. These are all basically the same mower as the Dixon you are looking for.

@ Dennis, Everyone I have talked to who has purchased the 28980 likes their mower. The district service manager has told me there has been NO problems or complaints on the service side.I have heard no complaints about cut quality. It does have basically the same deck Consumer’s Reports rated as one of the best on the Cub Cadet.
It will have a lot more power than the 28922 and the engine is a lot smoother. (It’s a v-twin) It is a commercial motor and is the top-of-the-line Briggs. The only disadvantage is it will use more fuel than the 28922.
It seems to be a very good mower and I recommend it highly.

@Armand. Golf courses use a powered plug aerator that pulls a plug of turf about the size of you index finger 2 to 4 inches deep. They put a dozen holes in every square foot of turf. The guy you hire if his machine is working right will pull a plug every four inches or so. When they are done there are “plugs” all over your lawn.Using the 24326 you will have to run over your lawn 5 or 6 times to get the same effect. Put enough weight on it to sink the pluggers at least 2 inches. You may need more or less than 100 lbs.

Paul, I am a first time riding lawn mower buyer. I have a 1/2 acre lawn that has a small hill in the back, the front is slighly sloped on the sides. I do not plan on snow plowing with it but would like to use a aereator. People have told me to buy a two cylinder because it vibrated less, I read one post where a person had to tie down the hood. Based on my usage do you reccomend the YT 3000 or Yt 4000? If I buy the 3000 will I regret not buying the 4000 later. I don’t want to buy too big but I do want enough hp. I plan on bagging leaves/grass. Do you recommend a two or three bin?
Also do you recommend a manual transmission because on my landscape or the hydrostatic transmission – fender or foot control? Also my 16 year old son will be using it.
I want to buy on Monday 6/1 I appreciate you responses
