4 Craftsman Garden Tractors – Which One Is Right For You?

Up Date 2012. This article is obsolete:  The current garden tractors are the Model 28861 2 Craftsman Garden Tractors Which One Is Right For You? and 25024 2 Craftsman Garden Tractors Which One Is Right For You?. Look in the right-hand column to read my reviews of these new models.

Sears sells over 45 Tractors and only 2 are labeled “Garden Tractors.”  They are all a lot more expensive than the gray and red models. Why would you want one?

4 Craftsmans1 2 Craftsman Garden Tractors Which One Is Right For You?

Let’s start out with a few qualifying questions.  Let’s see if a Garden Tractor is right for you.

– Are you wearing out your mower in 3 to 5 years?

– Do you spend hours every weekend mowing your acreage?

– You have 300 ft or longer driveway to clear snow from or grade.

– You use your tractor to do more than mow lawn.  You regularly pull hundreds of pounds or firewood, dirt, gravel, a boat.

-You want to pull a DR Power Grader, Acrease Wing Mower or Roto-Hog

– Someone told you that you need a zero-turn mower.  But your spouse refuses to even look at one of those crazy machines.

– You have 3 or more acres with ditches, embankments and other slopes a zero-turn will not mow.

– You are ready to spend a little more to get a mower that will last.

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions a Garden Tractor may just be right for you!

Let’s take a little time going over each Garden Tractor and let’s see which one of these 4 Craftsman’s is best for you.

Don’t Forget Your Trailer, Dethatcher, Aerator, Broadcast Spreader.

Let’s start with the newest Garden Tractor for 2011.  The GT6000 Model 28861 with Turn Tight Technology.

This Craftsman Garden Tractor has a powerful 26 hp Kohler Courage V-Twin engine and its heavy duty design enables it to perform with various ground engaging attachments. This Craftsman Garden Tractor also touts the tightest turning radius in the industry at 8 because it has Craftsman’s exclusive Turn Tight™ technology. A tighter turning radius lets you cut more efficiently around landscape obstacles and prevents you from the need to repeatedly reposition your tractor. When you add in the heavy-duty premium hydrostatic automatic transmission that allows you to cut grass at a top speed of 7.5MPH, a 54″ 12 gauge fabricated steel cutting deck to mow larger areas; this tractor gets the biggest jobs done in less time.

I will do a full review of this tractor soon.

  • Exclusive Craftsman Turn Tight™ technology delivers an 8″ turning radius
  • 26 hp Kohler Courage V-Twin Engine with pressure full lube
  • Heavy-duty 54″ deck

  • Cut grass up to 7.5 MPH
  • Heavy-duty premium hydrostatic automatic transmission

The next one to consider is the PGT9500 Model 28985. (Now called the Model 25007)

This tractor is in a class all by itself in the Craftsman Line up. Craftsman introduced this tractor last fall and it is sooo much better than all of the other Garden Tractors that I call it an “Estate Tractor.”   Why, first and foremost it has differential lock and traction control.  If you have hills this is the best Sears has to offer for hills.  Second, it weighs almost twice as much as the other three Garden Tractors. Third, it has hydraulic lift and power steering.  Fourth, the deck is reinforced with wear and kick plates.  Fifth, the chassis is much thicker than the other Garden Tractors.  Sixth, the engine is Briggs & Stratton’s best Professional Series and features heavy duty bearings, Electronic Fuel Management and automatic choke.

Yes, it is priced higher than the others, but for those of you who need this type of tractor it is actually priced better than the comparable tractors from other brands.

Here are a few articles on this tractor.  I will do a full 2011 review soon:

Definitions I used in this article.

Garden Tractors:($2200-$4000) Garden Tractors usually have 24 to 28 hp vertical shaft engines, heavy duty transmissions and you can mount a Sleeve Hitch to pull ground engaging attachments.  Most of these tractors have frames that are heavier than the Yard Tractors but do not have differential locks or traction control.  Designed Mow Large Lawns (2-5 acres), Climbs Hills Well, Heavy Yard Care, Heavy Hauling, Snow Removal, Garden Work, Better Engines. Accepts Heavy Ground Engaging Duty Attachments: See Attachments For a Complete Explanation. If maintained properly according to the owner’s manual these mowers will last you 5 to 15 years. If you are rough on your equipment, leave it outside, or don’t maintain it these mowers will not last that long for you.

Premium Tractors:($5000-$10,000) If you think you need a garden tractor seriously look at these before you buy one.  These tractors still have vertical shaft motors and belt driven transmissions like all the Lawn, Yard, and Garden tractors but have heavy duty components and “creature” features you can’t find on the lower priced machines.  The heaviest frames. These tractors will accept a slip scoop and are heavy enough to actually make it worth your investment. Real Power Steering, Heavy-duty transmissions with differential lock and traction control.  Hydraulic Lift for deck and sleeve hitch. If you are mowing more than 5 acres or 2 acres and a huge garden these are the tractors for you.  Will usually mow your lawn faster than the residential zero-turn mowers.  Mow The Largest Lawns, Climbs Hills Best, Heavy Yard Care, Heavy Hauling, Heavy Snow Removal, Garden Work, Move Dirt, Power Steering, Differential Lock, Big Vertical Shaft Engines. Accepts Heavy Ground Engaging Duty Attachments: See Attachments For a Complete Explanation. If maintained properly according to the owner’s manual this may be the last mower you have to buy.
