The 2011 Craftsman YT 4000 42 inch 24 hp Riding Lawn Tractor Model 28925 as far as I can tell has not changed from the 2010 model. This 42 in YT 4000 Yard Tractor does not have the Turn Tight feature. This is the most economical twin cylinder tractor in the Craftsman line. (As far as I can tell it is the least expensive twin cylinder on the market) It is easy to use and works well for your suburban lawn. It feature’s the 24 hp B&S Platinum motor and manual transmission.

What I Like!
Half of you who buy a Craftsman tractor will buy a YT 3000 or YT 4000. This Yard Tractor specifically has a 42 inch deck and 24 hp single cylinder Briggs & Stratton motor.
The leading consumer magazine and I have rated these mowers as a “Best Buy” and I feel they are the “best mower for about $1500.” The YT series is the best Craftsman for value, cut, durability and overall satisfaction for your typical suburban yard. Basically the YT 4000 series is available with 42 or 46 inch decks, twin cylinder, Kohler and Briggs & Stratton engines, manual or hydrostatic transmissions, and foot control speed controls.
Please read my reviews of all the YT models so you can find the best yard tractor for you. Over the last 2 years I have mowed with both the 42 and 46 inch decks and they cut as well or better than any other mid-sized deck from all the other brands. You will not be disappointed with the cut. With correct blades for your lawn the fully vented decks have good lift for poor lawns and get rid of the grass evenly and quickly for well kept lawns. With premium mulching blades and a mulch cover they mulch well. With hi-lift blades both decks bag very well.

My Review:
Priced at about $400 less than the highly comparable D130 John Deere and $300 less than the LTX 1042 Cub Cadet, this Craftsman is one of the best values on the market today.
The 28925 has a 6 speed manual transmission. This transmission is not as easy to use as a hydrostatic but it works great for large open areas and hilly lawns. If you are replacing your old Craftsman that had a manual trans this is the 2011 mower for you. If you are new to mowers you may want to look at a YT 4000 with foot control hydro. (it drives more like your car)
If you want a mower that will mow 3/4 to 2 acres well, handle a snow thrower, and all the non-ground engaging attachments this is a great choice for you. This tractor is heavy enough to handle moderately hilly and rough lawns. There are other mowers in the Craftsman lineup that will mow faster, or pull more, but this is a great all around mowing machine. This lawn tractor is one riding mower that will work well for your suburban lawn.
I like the mid-size YT 4000 series. It has more than enough power for the 42 and 46 inch decks. I think they represent a good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time. If I didn’t have 34 inch gates to go through on my own yard I would seriously consider a YT 4000 myself.
This yard tractor is capable of using all the non-ground engaging attachments Sears offers including a snow blade and snow thrower. Click here to see the full line of Sears attachments.
Cons:
This YT 4000 has a manual transmission. If you are not familiar with using a tractor or you have a teenager to train, I don’t recommend this particular Yard Tractor. Manual transmissions have the advantage of even, consistent pulling and work best for hills, but they can jerk when you shift into gear and then release the clutch. This mower is a good basic choice if you want to attach a snow thrower. (The GT 6000 series has more weight and larger tires)
Final Thoughts:
I personally feel the new Turn Tight Technology this yard tractor changes the game for just about all residential yard owners. For most of you this will mow as quickly as a residential zero-turn. It is easier to drive, is easier on your lawn and less expensive than the comparable zero-turn models. There is no “learning curve” like there is with a zero-turn. It will handle slopes that the residential zero-turns won’t. And………it will pull stuff!
There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it has a manual transmission. It is a good quality mid-sized mower designed to mow lawns well. Take care of it (do the normal maintenance all lawn mowers need) and it will last you a long time. I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for. At around $1499 on sale it is a great value.

Paul:
Does the model #28925 also have issues with mower deck hight adjustment, or does it give you the full range (1.5″ – 4″)? Turning radius and transmission type are not my major concerns.
Thanks,
George
@George, the 28925 has not had any issues with the height. But…..I don’t know if they changed anything in the last few months (smaller tires etc.) that may affect the cut height.
Paul:
Thanks for your response. Is there someone at Sears I could contact to confirm no changes that would affect cut height? I have certain spots in the yard where I must have that 4″ height to clear obstacles.
Thanks again,
George
@George, Go to mySears.com. Create a profile and then state your problem on the forums. A Sears rep will get in touch with you and help you get this resolved.
Thanks Paul! I’ll look into it and let you know what I find out.
Have a great day,
George
I just bought the YT4000 with a 42 inch deck vs. the 46 I saw at the store and I am very worried about the exposed flywheels for the belts on the 42 inch deck. I have a set of boots I wear with long shoe laces that I can see getting caught in this mechanism. The 46 inch deck has a housing covering the outer section of the fly wheels that feels safer. Anyone else worried about this or seen any issues. Tempted to send back prior to my 90 days and going with Deere (from a Deere rep)
@Larry, Read the back of your receipt. You actually only have 30 days for gas powered equipment. (It’s that way for most other brands nowdays, so Sears had to change it last year.)
1. The operator’s platform on the YT3000 and YT4000 is larger than most lawn tractors. So the mandrel (belt pulley) is not exposed like it normally is on larger decks.
2. With the new operator presence safety system you can’t get off the mower with the deck running (mandrel spinning)
3. For 2011 most deck are required to turn off quickly. I’m not sure about the 28925 since that one is not a turn-tight tractor. Start it up. Start the deck. Turn off the deck. How long does it take for the blades to stop spinning? It should be pretty quick (1-2 seconds) Let me know please.
Now, to state the obvious (no offense please) Why would you even consider getting off the mower with the deck running? Are you planning on disabling the safety switches that will stop the deck when you get off the seat? I grew up on a farm and I saw too many accidents where the farmer thought safeties were just something to slow him down.
I recently bought a new 28925 mower and the steering drag arm hit the engine pulley when turning right. It only turns about half of the possible turn. The tie rod ends look a little sloppy, but the tractor is brand new. The steering sector is properly timed. Got any ideas? Thanks!
@ Ed, That is the non-turn tight tractor and the steering is the same as the tens of thousands of older Craftsman and Husqvarna Lawn Tractors. All of them are designed to turn the same amount in both directions without rubbing on anything.
I have yet to hear about a problem like this so, it sounds like an assembly error.
I would call 1-800-4MY-Home and set up an appointment from a Sears Tech and have them fix it for you.
Paul,
Thanks for the quick reply. I stopped by Sears on the way home tonight and they are trying to get the service person out quicker than 30 days. Otherwise, he said that I could exchange it for a yt 4000 with the hydro tranny. What do you think of the hydro for hilly yards? What do you think of the tight turn technology?
Thanks,
Ed
@Ed, The hydro will work fine for hills. I really like the Turn Tight. In my opinion it will replace a zero turn for most people.
I don’t agree with the old train of thought about manual verses hydro trans. The Sears Associates are taught that gear is better on hills because if you get in trouble, you just put in the clutch and used the separate brake to guide your way down the hill. It was this way with the old H pattern manual trans. BUT, todays tractors all use an inline shift and when you push in on the Clutch/brake the tractor stops. You have no control over the coasting. If you push in on the clutch/brake while the tractor is slipping it will slide uncontrollably down the hill. Plus the manual trans tractors tend to be a little jerky when starting out. I know a few 28925′s that will pop the front wheels off the ground when you release the clutch.
The problem with a hydro is…. for example: You are going down a hill and the rear tires start to slide on the wet grass. You first instinct is to let up on the speed lever. This causes the tractor to slip and slide more (often uncontrollably like a car on ice) You need to learn to actually increase the speed lever so the wheels keep up with the slide. You then regain traction and control.
