2012 Husqvarna Model RZ5424 54 in 24 hp Zero-Turn Review

Executive Summary: I have sold quite a few of these over the last few years. It is a good flat land mower but before you buy this year please check out the 2014 Craftsman 54 inch zero-turn. Go Here: 54 inch Craftsman Model 20414

If you have a few acres of flat land this is one of the best deals on a residential zero-turn on the market. It is priced $1000 less than it’s competition. But before you make your decision to buy this one also look at the MZ5424S. The MZ has stronger transmissions and a much heavier frame. While this RZ is good for flat land the MZ5424S is much better on hills. Both are priced as a great value so figure out what type of lawn you have before you decide which mower to buy.

My Review:

If you are looking for a good zero-turn for your large and fairly flat lawn this is a great choice!  This is a basic, no frills zero-turn.  Like any other zero-turn that I rate as a “residential” don’t buy this if you have slopes or a rough undulating lawn.

It comes with Husqvarna’s vented hi-flow deck so it mows exceptionally well for a 54 inch.  Four anti-scalp wheels keep it from digging in on the dips and bumps in your yard. It has a full pressure Kohler motor for long life and good torque.  It uses Hydro-Gear EZT drives for a smooth and maintenance free performance. Adjustable steering levers. The removable foot pan and tip-up seat pan make servicing this mower very easy.  No need to lay on the ground to adjust anything.

This zero-turn will mow in reverse.

I like this zero-turn for the price/features.  You get decent tires, a decent motor, a decent deck, a decent seat, and a decent service record.

Ok, Now two examples, 1st, My neighbor has 3 acres of flat lawn with around 150 trees. His lawn is on sand and weak, so he needs a deck that lifts the grass well before it’s cut.  He mows every week.  He does not do any of his own maintenance. This mower is about right for him.  It should last him 10 years or so.

2nd example, I have a relative who has 5 acres of farm lawn in Northern Illinois.  It’s a heavy stand of bluegrass and fescue on black dirt so it stands up well by itself. He has two long 600 foot roadside ditches he mows. About 20 degree slopes.  He mows every 10 days or so.  This is not the zero-turn for him.  He needs the Craftsman 54 inch Craftsman Model 20417  or even an ExMark.  The 54 inch Craftsman Model 20417  is heavier to stay on those long slopes and the transmissions are strong enough to last.  (Hydro-transmissions generate a lot of heat and a residential transmission can easily overheat and burn up on those long of slopes)

If you have specific questions leave a comment below and myself or the readers will be glad to answer them.

Comfort – Ease of Use:  Deluxe seat, easy to use operator controls right at your side, good field of view.  While zero-turns are not as comfortable as Yard Tractors your butt won’t go numb on this mower.

Power For Mowing:  This tractor has plenty of power for side discharge mowing every week and bagging in the fall.

Reliability – New to 3 yrs:  There have been very few issues with the build quality for the units sold.  If you buy this mower from a servicing dealer, the servicing dealer takes care of it.  If you buy it from Amazon or a non-servicing dealer like Lowes you will have to take it to your local Husqvarna Dealer for servicing.

Handling – Traction/Steering:  This mower has average traction and handling and is similar to all the other residential zero-turns. You will not like this mower for rough lawns or slopes.   I recommend you never use a mower like this on wet or drought-dry slopes.

Mow – Mulch- Bag:  This mower get high marks by owners for mowing and bagging, but not for mulching.  The hi-flow design gets lots of air into the deck letting it stand up the grass.  The hi-flow also lets you add a bagger without the need to an additional blower.  But, because of the high air-flow this deck makes a mess when you install the mulch plug.  The vented spindles suck in a lot of air and it has to go somewhere.  The air usually comes out the right – front. So when you mulch a lot of grass gets blown out and if the wind is right … all over you. I like this deck, for every thing except mulching.
