Comparing the Tractor:
You all know I use the Craftsman lawn, yard and garden tractors as my baseline when comparing other brands. In this review though I am going to use the Husqvarna LGT2654 and the Craftsman GT6000 as comparison models. Why? Because this John Deere is very comparable to the LGT2654 and just under the GT6000 in features.
This tractor was is in a class of it’s own but with the introduction of the LGT2654 for almost $500 less it has now become an interesting debate as to what tractor is best for you. Like the LGT2654 it is not a Garden Tractor. It is designed to primarily mow lawns but unlike the LGT2654, the transmission is proven in the tractor. The trans holds up well when mowing and moving snow but a few owners have stated that it will not hold up on slopes. Unlike the LGT2654 I will recommend this tractor if you understand it is designed to mow large areas of grass well and is not designed for ground engaging tasks. (If you don’t need the large 22 inch tires take a look at the Craftsman YT4500. This Craftsman is $700 less. It has the same size deck and motor, 6 inch turn-tight steering. The tires are the standard 20 inch for lawn tractors.)
Consumer Reports has not rated this tractor. They tend to only review decks up to 48 inches. The owners do like the cut and a few state that it cuts as well as the ground-hugging Simplicity decks.
For less than $200 more the Craftsman 28861 has a stronger, garden tractor transmission, 6 inch turn tight steering and a better optional protection plan. Read my review here: Craftsman 28861 Review
Comparing the Warranty: The D170 comes with a 2 year defects warranty. There is an optional 4 year extended defects warranty that includes transportation to the local John Deere dealer. The Husqvarna LGT2654 comes with a 3 year defects warranty and Husqvarna does not offer an extended plan. The Craftsman 28861 comes with a 2 year defects warranty and has an optional 5 year Protection Plan that includes wear and tear items and service at your home.
The D170 has the foot control hydrostatic transmission. This transmission is easy to use and will perform well for mowing and medium duty yard tasks.
If you want a mower that will mow up to 5 acres well, handle a snow blade, snow thrower, and all the non-ground engaging attachments this is a great choice for you. This tractor is heavy enough to handle gently sloping and smooth lawns. There are other mowers that will mow faster, or pull more, but this is a great all around mowing machine.
I think this machine does represent a good value. This is John Deere’s economy line and this model does use a Briggs & Stratton ELS motor. If you take care of of the lawn tractor properly it will last you a long time.
This yard tractor is capable of using all the non-ground engaging attachments John Deere offers including a snow blade and snow thrower.
This John Deere Lawn Tractor compares somewhere between the Craftsman YT 4500 and Craftsman GT6000 . The Craftsman’s have the Turn Tight 6 inch radius steering. The Deere’s turning radius is 18 inches. The decks cut about the same. 54 inch residential decks do not mow as evenly as a 42 or 46 inch deck and the Deere and Craftsman’s mow about the same.
This is the best John Deere 100 Series “lawn tractor” for larger properties. It is not as rugged as the 300 series but if you mainly want to mow lawn and your lawn is not too hilly or rough this is a great choice.
These tractors are sold at Lowe, The Home Depot and your local John Deere dealer but I highly recommend you go visit your local dealer before you by one from the box stores. Why? Because you will end up going to the dealer to get parts and service. All warranty repairs are done through your local John Deere dealer. The dealer usually will give you the same price and will set up the tractor to make sure it is ready to mow your lawn. Most will also deliver your new mower and show you how to use it. Ask your dealer. “If I buy my tractor from Lowes or The Home Depot what priority do I get from you when it needs service? Is that priority different than if I buy from you?”
The D170 John Deere is a great lawn tractor and is a good choice if you want “green” on your lawn and have a larger suburban lawn to mow.
John Deere is a great company and they are one of the largest manufactures of farm equipment in the world. They have had a great reputation for good quality lawn tractors. The dealer network is good, though mainly located in rural areas. If you buy one from Home Depot be sure you understand the service options available including extended warranties and local service options. If you end up buying a Deere from them and then finding out that you have to haul your lawn tractor 40 miles to get it serviced or repaired …. the John Deere D170 may not be the best choice for you. John Deere does offer a warranty extension that includes hauling your mower to a servicing dealer for up to 4 years.
There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it is a good quality mower designed to mow lawns well. Take care of it (do the normal maintenance all lawn mowers need) and it will last you a long time. I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for.
