2014-2016 John Deere Model 42 inch D105 Review – Is this mower for you?

It’s Not What’s Best, It What’s Best For You! This John Deere mower drives just like your car!

The 2016 John Deere D105 is unchanged from the 2014 model.  This lawn tractor is very easy to use. Just put the lever on the right fender into F or R and push on the right floor pedal. (Just like your car) The solid one-piece frame is constructed of 12-gauge steel. If all your neighbors are driving tractors from other brands this John Deere D105 will make them jealous! Legendary John Deere durability is here on the 105 Series, thanks to a solid, one-piece, 12-gauge frame, along with heavy-duty crankshaft, a cast-iron front axle, and a high capacity engine filter – all proof that a lot more goes into a 105 Series tractor than meets the eye.

Is this mower for you?

  • It will mow about 1 acre an hour
  • Terrain: I don’t recommend this tractor for slopes or pulling heavy loads. The automatic transmission works best for flat and gently sloping lawns.
  • Standard Low Back Seat
  • Cast Iron front axle. This is axle better than the welded tube axle on other automatic transmission lawn tractors.
  • Turning Radius similar to the Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, Ariens or Husqvarna lawn tractors. If you don’t have a lot of small landscaping features and trees to mow around the 18 inch turning radius is fine.
  • It has the same quality engine as the Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, Ariens or Husqvarna
  • It is easy to shift, operates like an automatic in a car. Just put it in F or R and press the right foot pedal. To stop just lift your foot. A parking brake is on the left.
  • It is priced at $1499. It is the least expensive John Deere.
  • If you just want to mow your lawn, use a bagger to collect the clippings, and pull a small yard cart this mower will work well for you.
  • If you want a better engine than the one in your old John Deere but don’t mow steep slopes or ditches. Upgrade to a John Deere Riding Lawn Mower. D125 42 in. 20 HP Hydrostatic Front-Engine BG20709 if you mow steeper slopes.
  • Some John Deere dealers have on-site service or will pick up your tractor but you are responsible for the trip charge or for getting your tractor to the dealer for service
  • John Deere will set up this tractor and deliver it within 7-14 days by a local John Deere representative. At Delivery the customer will be taught by John Deere how to operate and maintain the mower.
  • Standard 2 year/120 hour warranty on the tractor.

I have used my JD D105 two times now. First time went okay. 2nd time every time I disengaged my blades the deck belt would fall off the front sheave. I would have to get off, put it back on every time. Should I take the tractor back or is this an easy fix? Can’t find it in the manual.

1/2 acre- whats the best way to get the John Deere 105 to go in reverse. Blades should be disengaged, which I did but when I re engage the engine backfired.

Hello! I’m considering the John Deere 105 lawn tractor. I’m a big guy–6’4″ and 280 pounds. Will I be comfortable? $1500 is a lot of money for me and that is my concern. Thanks

stuck with credit at lowe’s from return of 2016 troy-bilt 15.5/42″ pony (poor traction, sloppy steering, random forward speeds, no mow in reverse, a very slippery seat and the killer, open differential).

choice now between JD 105 42 and Husqvarna YTZ185 42.

1 acre suburban grass with a few 15 degree slopes.
not planning hauling or pushing anything.
leaf pick up significant factor.
need locking diff or an open that works better than the TB.
lots of speed changes and turns, don’t need cruise control.
reliability with propercare.

suggestion?

Hi Paul I am also looking at a new tractor. Cub Cadet XT 2 22 horse 42 deck. John Deere D125. Simplicity Regent and Husqvarna. I am worried about the transmissions being the weak link. I don’t need or want bigger than 42 deck but want a v-twin. I figure the most I will pull will be a 5×8 utility trailer with a yard and a half of mulch weight wise otherwise just a small 10 c f yard cart. My yard has a slope of about 4 feet drop in 20 feet to my back yard otherwise flat. The… Read more »

Hello Paul,
I am a city girl(NYC) and this is my first riding lawn mower. When I went to HomeDepot they had a JD-D140 that was refurbished for $1300 but it had 52hrs on it and about 2yrs 8mths manufactures warranty. It seemed to have a little rust on the metal rod for the steering wheel. They also had the JD-D105 brand new for $1500. Which one is the better buy? Does the 52hrs really matter?
BTW we live in Atlanta GA, have about a 1 Acre lot thats pretty flat, very mild slop in back yard.

I’m looking at getting the JD D105, but i noticed the comparable Airens 17/42 mower. I didn’t see a review on the Airen’s so I’m wondering if saving the $500 with the Airens is worth it in the long run.

Hi Paul, I just bought a John Deere D125. Will I be able to use the snow thrower attachment with it. Is the transmission strong enough for it?

We have a little over an acre and some step hills to maneuver. Can this model do the job?
