2015 Poulan Pro Lawn Tractors |My Review

If you are looking for a dependable, basic lawn tractor I feel that the Poulan Pro Lawn & Garden Tractors are the best deal you can get for 2015. Read on to find out why.

Poulan Pro has changed the line-up slightly for 2016. Basically they have dropped the garden tractor and added more orange to the hood. You can still get the 2015 models while supplies last on Amazon.

Since Poulan Pro changed the line-up I’ve written a new 2016 review here: 2016 Poulan Pro Review

Poulan Pro has always been the Rodney Dangerfield of the Lawn & Garden world.  It’s always been a good dependable brand but it never got the respect of the other brands. Why? Because dealers have always considered it their  second line. Dealers would have a line like Simplicity or Cub Cadet and then have one or two of the cheaper Poulan Pro’s on the sales floor. I can’t remember ever walking in and seeing the full line of Poulan Pro tractors sitting on a sales floor.

Poulan PRO PB175G42 Well, Poulan Pro is out to change that. Starting right now you can select the Poulan Pro that fits you best at a price that is $100 to $300 less than comparable models and it will be shipped free right to your garage/front door. All you have to do is take it out of the crate, check the tire pressure and put gas in it. (54 inch deck tractors take about 20 minutes to assemble)  PBGT2654 Manual PB20VA46 Manual

How are they shipped to your home? Read this article to find out more. Amazon – The Real Truth About Shipping Large Items

If you have read this blog for any length of time you know that there are only four manufactures of lawn tractors. These Poulan Pro tractors are made by the largest manufacture, Husqvarna and have all the basic features you want without all the glitz and glamor of the major brands. These lawn tractors just mow well. These lawn tractors are just as dependable as the other brands. What’s new for 2015 is they now included the heavy-duty components like reinforced decks, Kohler 7000 series engines and fast CVT transmissions that make them great lawn tractors at a great price. I highly recommend these to anyone who wants a good, honest lawn tractor.

One of the best things about these mowers is Husqvarna and Craftsman (917) accessories work! In other words if you have an old green craftsman with a 42 inch deck – the bagger and blades will work on these 42 inch tractors! The same goes for the 46 in 2 blade, 48 inch and 54 inch decks.

Are these mowers for you?

If you can change your own oil, blades and other typical maintenance tasks this is a good choice for you. You can save a lot of money doing your own maintenance not only with labor costs but all the normal parts you may need are available on Amazon. Oil filters, air filters, blades are about half the cost of a Craftsman part.

If you don’t have a set of combination wrenches, are not really mechanically inclined or just don’t have the time to do your own maintenance you will be happier with another brand of mower.

If you do need warranty work there are thousands of authorized service centers and you should have no problems finding one close to you. Here is the Poulan Pro Service Locator. I highly recommend you register your new lawn tractor here. Product Registration Page

Poulan PRO PBGT2654New PBGT2654Kohler 700054 inch26 HP$2876 w/free shippingAmazon Button

Recommended! The PBGT2654 is the garden tractor everyone has liked for the last 14 years. A simple to use tractor with a heavy duty, ground engaging, bulletproof transmission. Standard cast iron front axle with 16 inch turning radius. Big Seat. Big Tires. This tractor is like the Craftsman you owned in the mid-2000’s and loved. This tractor has the only two upgrades you really need. A new Kohler 7000 engine and the reinforced Pro deck.

1. 54 inch reinforced Pro deck. This is “Husqvarna’s” best deck. Powder coated steel deck. Five deck wheels. This deck rides over bumps well without scalping.
2. Reinforced Deck! This is one small feature that is not expected on a lawn tractor in this price range. This is a better deck than your old lawn tractor and the reinforcements will help it to last along time.
3. 4 gallon gas tank. You can mow for over 4 hours without needing to refill.
4. Strong Twin Cylinder Kohler 7000. This new motor already has a great reputation. Full Pressure lubrication for use on hills. Consistent Cut technology gives you more power right when you need it so you get a better cut even in tough mowing conditions.
5. WELDED lawn tractor frame. Many tractors in this price range the frames are just stamped sheet metal.
6. Spring assisted deck adjustment with 6 settings.
7. Mows in reverse
8. These riders are made by Husqvarna so Husqvarna baggers and accessories also fit.
9. Heavy duty G730 Garden Tractor transmission. This is one of the strongest transmissions on the market. You can level you driveway, till your garden and never worry about it. It will handle hills for the life of the tractor.

Poulan PRO PBLGT2654New PBLGT2654Kohler 700054 inch26 HP$2399 w/free shippingAmazon Button

The PBLGT2654 is a lawn tractor in a garden tractor frame. If your lawn is a little rough and you want the larger tires, better seat and overall better ride that a garden tractor offers but don’t plan on disking, tilling or leveling a driveway this is a good tractor for you. It uses the new Kohler 7000 engines and a K46 transmission.

If you don’t like to use a foot control for your speed this lawn tractor has a fender mounted speed control!

1. Strong Twin Cylinder Kohler 7000. This new motor already has a great reputation. Full Pressure lubrication for use on hills. Consistent Cut technology gives you more power right when you need it so you get a better cut even in tough mowing conditions.
2. Five deck wheels. This deck rides over bumps well without scalping. Having four really helps to prevent scalping.
3. Reinforced Deck! This is one small feature that is not expected on a lawn tractor in this price range. This is a better deck than your old lawn tractor and the reinforcements will help it to last a long time.
4. WELDED lawn tractor frame. Many tractors in this price range the frames are just stamped sheet metal.
5. Spring assisted deck adjustment with 6 settings.
6. Mows in reverse

Poulan PRO PB24VA54New PB24VA54Kohler 700054 inch24 HP$1999 w/free shippingAmazon Button

The PB24VA54 is not one of my top choices but it may be right for you.  If you mow your lawn shorter and have 1-3 acres to mow it is a great mower at a great price. Even though the specs state it will mow up to 4 inches in reality it will only mow up to 3 1/4 inches.  The problem with this lawn tractor is the tire size. It uses the same 20 inch rear tire found on the typical lawn tractor but these tires in combination with the 54 inch deck won’t give you the 4 inch cutting height as listed in the specs.  Standard cast iron front axle with 16 inch turning radius.

5. Spring assisted deck adjustment with 6 settings.
6. Mows in reverse
7. These riders are made by Husqvarna so Husqvarna baggers and accessories also fit.
8.The CVT transmission is better than the hydrostatic that’s typically in this price range lawn tractor. The mower is goes faster and the transmission stays cooler. A lot of slopes and hills is very hard on a hydro, whereas this CVT is known to handle hills with ease. The CVT transmission used in this mower is made by General Transmission and is the larger RS 800.  It’s the heavier of the two that they make. (The John Deere D105 uses the smaller RT 400.) Top speed is 7.5 MPH! That’s much faster than all hydro mowers in this category. Their typical top speed is 5.2 mph.  This is a great transmission if you want to use a snow blade. You don’t have to wait for it to warm up and it goes faster so the snow will roll off your blade better.

Poulan PRO PB22VA48New PB22VA48B & S Pro48 inch22 HP$1799 w/free shippingAmazon Button

RecommendedThe PB22VA48 is a perfect lawn tractor for most yards up to 2 acres. The larger 48 inch deck gets the job done faster and is still small enough that it cuts well if you lawn is rough. It is a simple to use lawn tractor that will handle a snow blade and snow blower! Nice Seat. Easy step through console. Standard cast iron front axle with 16 inch turning radius will never break.

1. 22 HP Briggs full pressure engine. This new motor has a history of lasting a long time without any problems. Full Pressure lubrication for use on hills. High quality at a great price.
2. 4 deck wheels push a nose roller to get over gopher mounds. This deck rides over bumps really well without scalping. Having five anti-scalp wheels really helps.
3. Reinforced Deck! This is one small feature that is not expected on a lawn tractor in this price range. This is a better deck than your old lawn tractor and the reinforcements will help it to last along time.
4. WELDED lawn tractor frame. Many tractors in this price range the frames are just stamped sheet metal.
5. Spring assisted deck adjustment with 6 settings.

The PB20A46 good lawn tractor for up to 2 acres. The 46 inch deck mulches well and will throw grass clipping into a bagger well. The single cylinder Kohler has one of the best reputations around.

1. Strong Single Cylinder Kohler. This motor has been around for a long time and has a great reputation. Full Pressure lubrication for use on hills. It’s one of the most fuel-efficient motors around. It offers plenty of power and torque for the 46 inch deck yet uses less than 3/4 gallon an hour of fuel.
2. Four deck wheels. This deck rides over bumps well without scalping. Having four really helps to prevent scalping.

Best Value! The PB18VA46 is a good basic lawn tractor. This is a very simple tractor to use and is strong enough to pull your yard cart, aerator and lawn sweeper.  Standard cast iron front axle with 16 inch turning radius. Poulan PRO PB145G42New PB145G42B & S42 inch14.5 HP$1099 w/free shippingAmazon Button

Least expensive Husqvarna built lawn tractor!  No lights, no gauge wheels, no frills but it cuts well! If you would like a simple, cheap lawn tractor that is stronger and better constructed than the “Wal-Mart” varieties I suggest this tractor.

1. Single Cylinder Briggs & Stratton. A good smooth running motor that has great fuel economy. It includes a high quality paper air cleaner with foam pre-cleaner.
4. WELDED lawn tractor frame. Many tractors in this price range the frames are just stamped sheet metal.
5. Spring assisted deck adjustment with 6 settings.

8. 6 speed Peerless gear transmission. It’s so dependable the Lawn Mower Racers use this tranny.

When this rider was introduced a few years ago (as a Craftsman Smart Rider) I liked everything about it but I couldn’t recommend it at that time because it had a problem. That problem is now fixed. Originally Husqvarna had a friction drive transmission installed but we quickly found out that transmission wasn’t heavy enough. Well they replaced that faulty trans with a bullet proof 4 speed geared transmission and now I can highly recommend this 30 inch rider.

1. I like the rack and pinion steering a lot. It’s very quick and makes this little mower very maneuverable. It’s as agile as a baby goat!
2. I like where all the controls are placed. It is very easy to operate. (It competitor the Troy-Bilt Neighborhood rider has the shifter control down between your legs and it’s hard to reach.)
3. The 30 inch deck mows well and comes with both a mulching cover and a side discharge.
4. The 11.5 hp Briggs is plenty for this rider and is very fuel-efficient.
5. On these small riders you sit up normally but they have a narrower wheel base than a 42 inch rider. Because of that you may feel uncomfortable operating this mower on a side slope. In other words I don’t suggest this rider if you mow a road ditch.

Hello Paul, my 28 year old craftsman 38″,12hp Tecumseh if finally getting tired. It gave me very few minor problems over the years! Looking to buy the Poulan pro model# pp19a42 from Home Depot. Do you feel this is a good choice or could you please recommend another lawn tractor. I like the cvt type trans.

Paul, did you find out anything more about the Poulan PB175G42? You said you would update comments once you heard back from Poulan. I am comparing this Poulan with a Troy Bilt
Pony 13AN77BS011 (same HP & cutting width) and trying to determine which is the best buy.
Thanks.

Hey Paul! My front yard has 12-15% curved slope, 1 acre total. 12YO Black Murray 17.5 HP 42″ Handled it well with occasional wheel slippage if grass damp; and pushed the engine hard. I bag half the year and mulch the other. Always had trouble balancing deck for downward curve so was uneven. (thinking it was b/c only 2 deck wheels)? Also we have Bermuda (GA.) I Really like the look of New CC XT1 Enduro Series LT 46 in. 22 HP V-Twin Kohler Hydrostatic At Depot ($1699). Your article made me consider the Poulan Pro, Model 960460079 46″ 20HP… Read more »

I just picked up a PB20A46 at a Sears outlet store. They had 6 new ones sitting there at the Dayton area store for $1399. Didn’t think the old Craftsman would make it much longer at the new place. Had to buy new appliances and had some sears rewards points so I walked out for $1100 including tax. Love the thing. Couldn’t touch the features of this mower in the craftsman, cub, John deer lines for less than about $300-600 more. I had come across the article before made it an easy choice. Thanks.

Poulan Pro PB301 Hi Paul, just come across your site and found some interesting reading. First off, I have a road ditch. Otherwise, it’s flat, I live in Sw Florida, where you have to drive a half day to find the first hill. My current mower is a Toro by Wheelhorse, 8 hp Briggs and Stratton, 30″ deck, which by the way, would easily handle the ditch with no problems at all, especially if taken head on.. 3 weeks ago, my engine developed a tight spot. I pried it loose, but the next time, it just locked up harder. I’ve… Read more »

Paul, I wish that every time I bought something I could find a site like this. Extremely informative… So, just to confirm the discussions below, the Home Depot version is inferior to the Amazon version? Will they still work? I’ve got a wife who really wants our 5 acre yard mowed, and my old Ford lawn and garden tractor just decided to quit. I was looking at the PP24VA54, but from your comments, it might be better to go with the PP20VA46. We have about a 10% slope, with a berm and ditch straight across the property.

This is a GREAT resource for people looking for a new lawn tractor. My Craftsman 15 1/2 HP is now 12 years old and still running strong, but I thought it time to look around for a new one starting last year. I spent many hours studying the manual transmission mowers and settled on the Ariens. This year I was ready to buy and they were gone! Just disappeared! Not one single riding mower was available for sale. Where did they all go?? I have a feeling that Husqvarna simply traded the Ariens brand for the Poulan? Anyway, tomorrow I… Read more »

Hi,
Confused weather the $1199 model has a cast iron front axle or not. I look at the Home Depot website and it looks like it does have a cast iron front axle. But the ones in the store don’t, looks like a steel axle.

What about the Poulan Pro PB155G42? I’m considering a new one at a discounted price since it’s been sitting at the dealer since last year. I’ve got a few acres to mow and not a lot of investment capital.

Paul, Love the site, your doing a great service here and I truly appreciate your time invested. I purchased the Poulan Pro PB20A46 last year based on your review and have been mostly happy with it besides a few quirks. I’m looking for some info on setting up the cutting height. The adjustment rods are self explanatory, but the manual states that I should be able to arrive near a 4″ cutting height. Unless I’m mistaken, it’s impossible to get anywhere near 4″ height and have the deck not rub the front tires during a tight turn. The highest cut… Read more »

Have been on your site for a while now trying to figure out the perfect tractor for my yard. I just built my home and the grass is finally starting to come in so I figured it was about time to buy something but I don’t want to buy the wrong product. I have about 1 1/2 acres to mow. The front yard is a hill of about 10-12 degrees and the rest is mostly flat. I live in Maine, so I would like to hook a snowblower up to the front of it. I will not be doing any… Read more »

I am considering a closeout Poulan Pro PB20A46 with the single cylinder Kohler engine for just over $1,000. It is new and seems like a good unit based upon what I have read on your site. You mentioned that Craftsman/Husky attachments are interchangeable with this Poulan-are replacement parts also interchangeable? What Craftsman and Husky models are the equivalent of this Poulan so that I can reference replacement parts in the future? For example, I want to get wheel weights for my new Poulan, which Craftsman/Husky weights should I order? I think that finding Craftsman/Husky parts will be easier that the… Read more »

Hi Paul, I’m looking to purchase my first “new” riding mower; been using hand me downs for years. I have a 1/2 acre fairly flat lot w/ a gentle slope down to a creek on one side. The only issues I really have are some pesky water maple roots to traverse. As such I am looking for an economical, fairly basic 42″ tractor for use w/ a bagger & maybe a sweeper but nothing more. Having previous less than positive experiences with MTD’s I was all but sold on the Poulan Pro PB185A42 as the machine meets my needs &… Read more »

hi Paul,

I just bought my husband a 2015 Poulan pb301 from Craigslist. It was owned by and elderly man and only used 3 times.

I am concerned with the reviews I read on other sites. Have you seen these?

You mention on your blog the mower did have problems but now is fixed. What year did it get fixed?

Is there any type of grass clipping bag that can connect to this unit?

Hey Paul! I forgot one more thing I wanted to tell you. When looking at the sears pro series model 20438.The claiming to have a hydrostatic transmission had a fan blade attached to the top of the pulley on top of the aluminum housed transmission.Hummm does this say there might be an overheating issue here. In the Texas summer heat you would be blowing 95 to 100 degree air over the tranny, not much relief. Thanks again for

Hello.I am looking at the Poulan pro 46 inch with the b&s 20 hpv twin intec engine.I have hills to contend with. They state that that engine has full pressure lubrication in the engine but you stated that the engine has a poor reputation for lasting on hilly terrain.I thought the full pressure lubrication would take care of that.I read the craftsman platinum BS engine is a good one for hills, but as the v twin intec it states full pressure lubrication. This all makes my head spin.Am I missing something for should I settle for the KohIer courage.Thank You John

Hi Paul,

I was looking at the Poulan’s but some are out of stock on Amazon. So I’ve been looking around. What do you know about the Troy-Bilt Bronco 42” Automatic with Kohler Courage 17hp model 13WV78KS011? At $1,199 (minus 10% coupon, 6% cash back, $100 Lowes Gift Card right now) it looks like a great buy. I can’t find which CVT it has, could you help? I have some gentle slopes and wouldn’t abuse the transmission for things it’s not designed for. Thank you.

Hi Paul, Great site! I am trying to figure out which is the best lawn tractor for our .5 acre lot with fairly steep hills on both sides of the house. I have an old Craftsman tractor 917271141 that I have almost burned up the tranny pulling an aerator up these two hills. I don’t need a big deck, 42 inch is preferable. I saw the Poulan Pro PB185A42 at a local store here and saw your review. I seem to be leaning toward this one. Would this CVT handle pulling an aerator up hills? Hi Paul, You’ll never know how much my day was lifted when I stumbled on to your column. I’ve spent the last 3 weeks trying to find the right tractor to replace my 12 yr old Craftsmen DGT 6000. 48″ deck, HyroGear trans, and 24x12x12 tires(yes that’s right). My wife insists I need a new tractor for Fathers day and my birthday, July3 (I’m fixing the old one a lot). Let me pose my basic question then I will vent a little about the lack of product info services from the manufacturers. I think this Poulan Pro PBGT2654 is the… Read more »

Hi Paul, I’ve been doing a lot of research on mowers over the past few weeks since my last one broke, and I think I’ve narrowed down my options to either the Poulan Pro PB24VA54 or the Troy-Bilt XP Super Bronco 54″ (See link: http://www.lowes.com/pd_637773-270-13WQA2KW011_1z0wgcvZ1z140sa__?productId=50354328&pl=1). I could buy either mower for about the same price since I have a 10% off recent mover’s promotion from Lowes, and I’m on a strict $2,000 budget. I live in Northern VA and have about 6 acres to mow every other week – thus I’m leaning towards something with the biggest deck I can… Read more »

You state that these Poulan’s are bells and whistles less versions of Husqvarna models… O.K., which of these would be more or less equivalent to a Husqvarna YTH22V46? And, which transmission does the Husqvarna have and how does it compare to the Poulan CVT?
For my 1.5 acres of weeds, hay, and some buffalo grass in Elbert County, CO…

Can you comment on snowblower attachments for these? Do they work well and which tractor needed to sufficiently power one? 115 ft driveway in central VT with over 100″ snowfall per year.

Hi Paul, How does the Poulan Pro PBLGT2654 compare to the Husqvarna LGT2654? I’m not sure I can find a Poulan locally to check out in person but I know I can find a Husqvarna.

Great site. Paul, the link you provide for the PB301 leads to a ‘discontinued’ model. The same model can be found for a little more money on Amazon though. Home Depot has a couple listed as the PB301, but lists them as 10.5hp, and at a couple of price points and no mention of difference between them (no reason given for the price difference).
What is the model number for the current one to ensure I’m getting the updated tranny?

I ordered a PBGT2654 off Amazon the other day, out-of-stock with estimated delivery in May. Interestingly (after I placed my order) it is marked as no longer available. Several other 2015 Poulan Pro models are now marked as unavailable as well.

No one but Amazon could know for sure, but Is something up with Poulan Pro distribution?

It looks like a good garden tractor. I hope I receive it.

Assuming it is available, do you have an recommendations for wheel weights? Since the tires are a different size than most the Sears and Husqvarna models it is difficult to see which would be the correct model to order.

Hi Paul,

At the 46 inch size Poulan Pro would you recommend the Briggs 20hp 2 cylinder quickstart or the kohler courage 1 cylinder? I have some decent hills to contend with and would like to be able to tow light loads.

Thanks

Paul, recently discovered your website. You provide great insight. The PBGT2654 seems like a beast for a great price. Couple of questions. (1) How is the welded frame different from those found Cubs, Husqvaranas, etc. (2) How does the Hydro-Gear G730 stack up against a Tuff Torq K66 (and a K58)? (3) You mentioned some of the current attachments will work (mulching kit, bagger), but what about front end attachments like a blade? Thanks, Bill

Your site is great, finally retiring my 1970 Wards/Gilson 14hp I’ve used for snow blowing, and the information in your site has been invaluable. I really like the Poulan/Husqvarna’s, great price and with the H/D CVT trans. I know you said it takes all the Craftsman attachments, but Home Depot list the AgriFab LST42c snow blower and says it fits Husqvarna, Poulan, and EHP(?,never heard of that), no mention of Craftsman. I presumed the LST42c was the same as the Craftsman 24837. Will the 24837 fit on the Poulan’s? Thanks.
