2012 Husqvarna 42 in 19.5 hp Zero Turn Model RZ4219 Review

Executive Summary: If you want a small residential zero-turn this is the best one on the market.  Why? A few years ago Husqvarna purchased Dixon.  Dixon arguably had the best residential zero-turns for the last 30 years. Husqvarna took the best of the Dixon and the best Husqvarna 42 in deck and created this zero-turn.  It mows great, drives great and is about as rugged as you get. If you have less than 2 acres of relatively flat lawn with a lot of obstacles this is a great choice! You can easily cut your mowing and trimming time in half over using your old Ariens, Cub Cadet, or John Deere lawn tractor.

by: Paul Sikkema

These units are lightweight and have large, flat tires.  If you learn to use your zero-turn properly this mower will not mar your lawn like some of the other brands that weigh more and have rounded tires.

This 42 inch version is good for smaller yards up to 1.5 acres. It is great as a second mower for trimming.

My Review:

All of the small zero-turns (under 50 inch) don’t work well on hills. If you have ditches and side-hills to mow stay away from these zero-turns. Basically all brands are not heavy enough and won’t stay on the hills.  But if your lawn is basically flat these little machines can be huge time savers.  For example, it takes me about 45 minutes to mow my lawn with a conventional 42 inch lawn tractor. I can mow it with a 42 inch zero-turn (an older Dixon) in 17 minutes.

This Zero-turn will mow in reverse.

Drives: Hydro-Gear EZT drives are good maintenance free transmissions, but many other manufactures put these in too heavy of mowers and they don’t last as long as they should.  I give other zero-turns a low rating for using the Hydro-Gear EZT drives, but in this light of mower they are just right.  I expect these maintenance free transmissions will last the life of this mower.

Frame and Casters:  Husqvarna uses the largest casters possible to give you the smoothest ride. Coupled with a robust frame you will never experience a cracked frame.

Rear Bumper: Trust me, you need a rear bumper.  The bumper protects your engine and protects your landscaping and buildings from getting destroyed.

Air Induction Deck: This Husqvarna deck has air intakes around the blade spindles. This draws a lot more air into the deck which lets the blades create tremendous lift.  This gives you a much superior cut compared to regular decks.

Removable Foot Pan: Your can easily remove the foot rest.  This allows you to easily clean the mower and perform maintenance on the deck without taking it off all the time.

People who buy this lawn tractor know what they are buying and this is just what they want. It is designed to mow your lawn quickly and well.  You can pull a small yard cart with it, but most people can’t back the cart up.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on this review.  If you have specific questions leave a comment below and myself or the readers will be glad to answer them.  This is a great tractor and if you want one to last this should be at the top of your list.

Comfort – Ease of Use:  On this zero-turn you sit up straight – like you would on a kitchen chair.  This makes it much easier to get on and of and is easier on your back.  It has easy to use operator controls and a good field of view.  Zero-turns are not as comfortable as Yard Tractors or the New Premium Craftsman Tractors your with this one your butt won’t go numb.

Power For Mowing:  This tractor has plenty of power for side discharge mowing and mulching every week.  I don’t like to install baggers on 42 inch zero-turns.  It makes the front end light and the unit can be hard to steer on slopes.

Reliability – New to 3 yrs: This tractor is serviced by Sears.  There are no issues with the build quality and I don’t expect any.  The quality control at the factory for the Husqvarna Zero-Turns has been fantastic .

Handling – Traction/Steering:  This zero-turn has average traction and handling for a residential zero-turn.  It does have a rigid frame so if your lawn is very rough you will have some traction problems.  (If a front wheel falls into a pothole the opposite rear wheel will lose traction)  I recommend you never use a mower like this on wet or drought-dry slopes.

Mow – Mulch- Bag:  This deck gets high marks by owners for mowing and mulching. I don’t like to install baggers on 42 inch zero-turns because it makes them back heavy.   With this tractor/deck you set the height of cut using a lever on the tractor.

Have owned mine for three years now and not had any issues until recently the drive belt broke . I thought it would be a fairly simple task but not so. I can see how belt wraps around ez pullys but for whatever reason they placed a bolt down through the deck, looks to be a bracket of some sort. Does anyone know if bolt needs to be removed in order to place belt on right side pully?

I have about 1 acre to mow, but a lot are sloping, so which would be the best zero turn for me. If you can, please give low to mid priced . maybe three or four to pick from. Thanks so much
