New Deluxe Mantis Tiller – Cultivator Review. Do You Own a Mantis? I do.

Executive Summary: There are only two types of tillers in my opinion.  A big rear tine rototiller, and a Mantis.  All of the other tillers and cultivators out there are either obsolete or poorly designed.  I know,  who am I to tell you that the front tine tiller you have in your shed is no good?  In this article I’ll show you why your front-tine tiller and all the other small cultivators just don’t match a Mantis.

There are other “mini-tillers” on the market, but they don’t have the special tines or the tine speed the Mantis has.

My Review:

Tiller – Cultivator – What’s The Difference?

A tiller is usually defined as a gas powered L&G tool that use a set of heavy, thick  Bolo Tines to dig up the soil.  This type is referred to as a “rototiller” You will find bolo tines on front-tine tillers and large tillers like the Troy-Bilt Horse.  All tillers except the Mantis use these bolo tines.

These tines work by beating the soil and chewing it up into smaller pieces.  The rear-tine tiller models work very well for initial soil preparation. The old fashioned front tine tiller like the one pictured are very hard to use and for most people one of the worst garden tasks.

A cultivator is usually defined as a small, lightweight tiller that is only used for weeding.  All of the brands except Mantis use a lighweight version of the bolo tine on these little machines.

Mantis has a unique (patented) tine that is much different than bolo tines.  The tines are designed to be used for tilling (deep, garden prep) and easily reversed for cultivating (weeding)

A Mantis 9 inch tiller will do more for you faster than any of the other front tine tillers on the market! I don’t just mean the small cultivators, but the larger lawn mower engine style front tine tillers!

Mantis tillers are so productive compared to all the other tillers that I had one in the back of all my landscape trucks.  The crews used them for initial bed work, weeding and even digging holes for trees and bushes.  They were always in the trucks and were so durable I never replaced one in the eight years I owned the landscape company.

Don’t get me wrong, the big rear-tine tillers like the Craftsman 208CC Dual Rotating Rear Tine Tiller have their place and I will review the best of them in other reviews. But for most of you, I know the Mantis is the best overall tiller.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on this review.  If you have specific questions leave a comment below and myself or the readers will be glad to answer them.
