Half of you who buy a Craftsman tractor this year will buy a YT 3000 or YT 4000. The leading consumer magazine and I have rated these mowers as a “Best Buy” and I will again this year rate all of them except this one as the “best mower for about $1500.”
This review covers the YT 3000 with a single cylinder, 42 inch deck, and manual transmission. If you want a larger deck, hydro, or plan to install a snow thrower look at the other models.

My Review:
I am not going to recommend the 28921 this year. While it is a good mower and has a good reputation there have been to many complaints about the clutch. The clutch is too touchy and I have more customers complain about the jerkiness than anything else. For 100 dollars more move up to the 28922 with the hydro transmission and 42 inch deck.
If you talk to a Sears Service Tech they feel the hydro is more reliable. They have fewer repairs with the hydro models.
I know, Craftsman recommends the manual transmission for hilly terrain, but if you learn to use a hydro correctly you will never have a problem.
“The problem here is when you are on a steep hill (too steep for recommended use) and you start to slide. Sometimes you can also get into this predicament if the grass is really wet or bone dry (drought.) On a steep hill with a gear drive and the tractor starts to slip, stepping on the clutch/brake releases the transmission and the mower will coast to the bottom of the hill. If you use the brake carefully you can usually get the mower to stop without the rear wheels locking up and sliding down the hill. It can be a wild ride but usually controlable if you are lucky enough.
With a hydro in the same situation when you release the clutch/brake the transmission doesn’t ”freewheel” like most of the gear drive transmissions do. (Most shift-on-the-go manual transmissions act like a hydro though) The transmission acts like you set the brake and if you start to slip down the hill the rear wheels slide. (Just like locking your car wheels on ice) This ride is not controlable and usually ends in a lot of cussing when you slide into your retention pond or fence at the bottom of the hill. “
Simply stated: If you are worried about the hill being to steep for a hydro ….. it probalby is and you should either walk it with a push mower or get more experience before you try to mow it with a rider.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the mid-size YT 3000 series. I think they represent a good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time. It is just the gear drive 28921 that I am not recommending.

Final Thoughts:
Consumer Reports gave the 2008 46 inch model a best buy and Sears has designed this deck to mow as well. There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it is a good quality mid-sized mower designed to mow lawns well. I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for. At around $1400 on sale it is a very good value.

The leading consumer magazine and I have rated these mowers as a “Best Buy” and I will again this year rate them as the “best mower for about $1500.” This is the best Craftsman for value, cut, durability and overall satisfaction. Basically the YT 3000 and YT 4000 series is available with 42 or 46 inch decks, single cylinder or twin cylinder motors, manual or hydro transmissions, and fender or foot control speed controls. Please read my reviews of all the YT models so you can find the best mower for you. Over the last year I have mowed with both the 42 and 46 inch decks and they cut as well or better than any other mid-sized deck. The fully vented decks have good lift for poor lawns and get rid of the grass evenly and quickly for well kept lawns. With premium mulching blades and a mulch cover they mulch well. With hi-lift blades both decks bag very well.
This review covers the YT 3000 with a single cylinder, 46 inch deck, and fender control hydro. If you want a smaller deck or plan to install a snow thrower look at the other models.

My Review:
For 100 dollars more than the Craftsman Model 28905 LT 2000 Lawn Tractor you can move up to the mid-sized YT 3000 yard tractor series. This model features the new Craftsman style step through operator’s platform, pressurized lube engine with oil filter, and a 46 inch deck. This is the same deck as Model 28724 Consumer Reports 2008 Best Buy.
The 28924 has the fender control hydro. If you are replacing your old Craftsman that had fender controls this is the new mower for you. If you are new to mowers you should look at the 28934 foot control. (it drives more like your car)
If you want a mower that will mow 1/2 to 2 acres well, handle a snow blade, and all the non-ground engaging attachments this is the mower in the Craftsman lineup that will do the job for you. This tractor is heavy enough to handle hilly and rough lawns. There are other mowers in the Craftsman lineup that will mow faster, or pull more but this is a great all around mowing machine.
I like the mid-size YT 3000 series. I think they represent a good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time.

Cons:
The YT 3000 is heavy enough, but I recommend going to a twin cylinder motor (YT 4000) if you want to attach a snow thrower. You will wish you had bought a larger engine for snow throwing.
The 46 inch deck has a much larger grass deflector than the 42 inch deck. If you have tight areas you may decide the 42 inch is a better choice.

Plain and simple, this is the cheapest riding lawn mower available. If that is what you want, this is it! You can ride on it while it attempts to cut the grass. It is listed as a “Lawn Tractor” but it really isn’t. It’s a riding lawn mower with a hood. The deck cuts the grass but has very little lift or throw. Don’t bother to buy a bagger, buy a pull behind sweeper …. it will do a better job. The frame is the lightest possible, the motor is the cheapest Briggs offers. It has only two features that make it worth considering. First, it’s cheap and second, it makes a great platform for the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association stock class.

My Review:
This mower has been around for years in one form or another and people either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground. Some people get 10, 15 years out of it. Most people only get two or three. If you are hard on equipment, don’t buy this mower, it will not hold up for you.
Other than that, the Yard Machines riding lawn mower is the cheapest mower available. There are no frills. It will not mow in reverse. The tires are little more than inner tubes with magic marker lines for tread. If you have trees in your yard, you will have flats. You might as well buy four containers of “Slime” right away and fill the tires. There is a bagger available for it, but I strongly recommend that you don’t buy this mower with the intention of EVER putting a bagger on it. The deck is not designed to give you good lift or throw. It will not throw the grass well into the bagger. It will not fill the bagger up completely like the Craftsman YT3000 and YT 4000 tractors do.
Ok, Now that I have vented………… it beats walking. It’s cheap. And it looks really cool when you chop and channel it for lawn mower racing.

Summary: I am going to start the reviews this year with my favorite. If you have 1/2 an acre or less to mow this may just be the perfect mower for you. This mower is simple, rugged, and will give you years of use. You can find a cheaper mower in the 2010 Craftsman line up but I feel you can’t find a better value if you have a small lot. My Review:
If you have one acre or less of lawn. If you have an “English Garden” If you have gates to go through or paths to mow this is the mower for you. In 2004 Briggs & Stratton purchased Simplicity/Snapper. Along with the merger came Snapper’s rear engine rider. Snapper invented the rear-engine rider and now you can buy it under the Craftsman name.
You already know this mower. It has been around for years. It mows well. It’s agile. It’s simple. It get the job done and keeps on running for years. I won’t get to drive the Craftsman model until April, but I don’t have to……. I know the machine. It is a simple machine and it works!
Craftsman is offering this mower with the standard deck and hi-lift blades. Craftsman does not have a mulch kit available yet, but you can buy a “Gator Blade,” and a mulch cover through the links in the specs section of this article.
One of the features I really like about this machine is you can grab the front axle and stand it on the rear end. You can inspect it, clean it and store it this way. (If you store it on end, you must take the battery out) This is a really nice feature if you have a small space to store your mower!
The Disc Drive Transmission design has been around for years and eliminates complicated clutches and provides easy forward/reverse drive. The disc travels across the drive plate to achieve ground speed. This is the same type of transmission found a the majority of snow blowers. Simple, effective and almost bulletproof. You should know that the transmission is designed to pull you, a loaded bagger OR a light duty cart. If you try to use this mower to pull heavy loads you will prematurely wear out the drive “tire” in the transmission. It is an easy repair if you do wear it out, but keep in mind this mower is only designed to mow lawns, not be a “garden tractor.”
The steering on this mower is the fastest of all the mowers. The one-to-one steering ratio helps you maneuver easily around tight spots and make quick turns. It is not hard to steer and you will really like the quick response.
The deck follows the front axle and has a pivoting frame. This allows the mower to easily adjust to the contours of any lawn for a smooth cut. If you have a lawn with a lot of short dips and rises this feature lets the deck follow those contours easily. The deck is easily adjustable if it ever needs leveling.
In my opinion there is no better mower for a small lot than this one. It mows well, is very maneuverable, simple to repair, simple to clean and can be tipped up on end to take up less room in your garage.

Look to your right and follow toolboxhero on Facebook to find all the day to day items as they happen this spring. There are a number of contests I’ll be telling you about and give you quick insights on my favorite mowers.
Before I show you the specs and my reviews of the 2010 Craftsman tractors I am going to talk about the new tighter turning radius on the 2010 Craftsman Lawn Tractors and Professional series.
I want to be upfront in this article and tell you…….this is not a problem. But it is a change from what you are used to and it will require a change in thinking on your part. Just like learning to use the new safety features on todays mowers, you will need to be aware of this change and how to adapt to it once you start using your new machine.
Is 12 inches to short?
A 12 inch turning radius is good, (better than 16 inches, right?) but you need to be aware of the pitfalls of having this tight of turning radius on this wheelbase mower. There are trade-offs in the design and manufacture of just about any riding lawn mower and this is a great example of one of those trade offs.
First I want to use your car as an example. When you turn sharply with your car the front wheels turn, but they also tilt to decrease the turning radius (the outside front wheel is tipped to provide traction, right front wheel in a left turn, left wheel in a right turn). The longer the vehicle the more tilt is needed to make it turn sharp. If you watch the front wheels on a Honda Civic turn sharply and then an extended cab pickup, you will see what I mean. The front wheels on the pickup tilt more than the Civic so it can turn sharply.
So what does that have to do with my lawn tractor?
With the common wheelbase (length) for todays lawn tractors, 15 inches is about the minimum turning radius. With this turning radius the front steering tilt can stay relatively straight and is not tilted so much that it digs up the turf when you turn. If you go smaller than that (say 12 inches) you run into the problem of having to increase the tilt in the front axle to the point where the front outside tire will dig ruts in poor turf.
So what can be done to get this tight of turning radius?
Over the years various companies have created different solutions to this problem. Husqvarna doesn’t go tighter than a 16 inch turning radius. John Deere and Snapper have rear axles that steer. New Holland developed the “Super Steer” on the Boomer where the front axle pivots. Craftsman’s Revolution uses two transmissions to “zero turn.” Kubota uses an over-speed system on the front axles of their four-wheel drive. My 1953 Super H Farmall uses independent brakes for the rear axles. But all these solutions cost, and add hundreds or thousands of dollars onto the cost of the machine.
In my opinion Craftsman choose to keep the cost down on the 2010 Lawn Tractors and Professional Series Tractors by not incorporating these expensive solutions. They are determined to give you the best value and dependability while still offering as many features as possible to make your mowing fast and enjoyable. But in doing so they had to make a small trade off in the way the mower steers.
Alternatives for you:
If you have a good healthy lawn this increased tilt on the front wheels will not be a problem for you. You will like the tighter turning radius and how you can mow your lawn faster. If you have a poor lawn though, especially a poor one on sandy soil you need to know that you will not be able to turn the Lawn Tractors and Professional Series Tractors as tightly as described in Craftsman’s sales literature without tearing up your lawn. Simply stated: If the tractor is digging up your lawn, don’t turn it that sharp!
The solution is simple:
Craftsman has many different styles of riding mowers and tractors to choose from. You can find a tractor that is right for you. You should look not only at the size of tractor relative to your lawn, but look at the number of obstacles and the condition of your lawn. If you have a poor lawn but few obstacles I suggest you look at the Craftsman Yard Tractor Series or Garden Tractor Series. If you have a poor lawn with a lot of obstacles look at the Revolution. Be aware of what your new Lawn Tractor or Professional Series Tractor can do, but also be aware of what limitations your lawn will put on the performance of your new tractor.
Besides listening to me, you can use the Click To Talk to discuss your needs with a Sears Blue Lawn & Garden Crew Expert to find the best mower for you.

Pros:
Compare this mower to the Toro Titan, John Deere Z520A Estate Series Z-Trak, and the Simplicity ZT 4000. I think the PYT9000 28975 represents a very good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time.
As you know I like Kohler engines, but Briggs & Stratton has really produced a great motor in the 26 hp Extended Life Series. The Briggs engineers I know are proud of this motor and feel it is the best motor Briggs has ever produced and maybe the best motor for lawn tractors in production today. The ELS motor features advanced debris management, anti-vibration system, chrome plated exhaust valve, Dura-Bore Cast Iron Sleeve (cylinder liner), full pressure lubrication with spin-on oil filter, heavy-duty upper bearing, and automotive style oil fill tube and dipstick.
This zero turn lawn mower is capable of handling many pull behind attachments Sears offers including a yard carts and spreaders. Click here to see the full line of Sears attachments.

At this time Craftsman does not have bagger listed for this mower that I can find on their website. If you want a bagger you can get one through bobcatturf. Bobcat makes the mower for Craftsman
Cons:
There is a “learning curve” with zero-turn mowers. Two lever control zero-turn mowers drive just like a shopping cart, but it takes some practice to keep the inside wheel from digging divots in your lawn when doing 180 degree turns. ( A 1/2 hour of practicing is usually enough to learn. When you are turning watch the rear wheel on the inside of the turn and move the levers so it keeps turning as you make your turn. If you pivot on the inside wheel you will dig holes in your yard.)
Do not confuse the PZT 9000 with a high end commercial zero-turn mower. Although it is built better, stronger and designed to mow faster than many commercial machines, in my opinion this is a high end residential mower. It will give you years and years of service on your 15 acre lawn, but it is not designed to mow 8 to 10 hours a days, 7 days a week like the ExMark, Wright, and Toro commercial machines.
The dfference between this machine and a high end commercial zero-turn is the drive system. The heavy duty commercial zero-turns use a pump and motor for each rear wheel. The PZT9000 uses a dual hydrostatic transaxle. You will never break this drive system mowing your 5 to 20 acre lawn, but a commercial mower who uses his machine 40 to 50 hours a week probably would.
This mower is built better than the normal consumer zero turn mower and is well worth the extra money. It does not have the features or the life expectancy of a true commercial machine. (No one makes a commercial “garden tractor”) Commercial mowers have 7 gauge, 5 inch deep decks and 1/4 inch thick box tube frames. Commercial mowers cost thousands more than consumer models. (A typical 50 inch heavy duty commercial mower costs 7 to 15 thousand dollars )
There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it is a good quality riding lawn mower designed to mow lawns well. It is heavier built than a normal consumer mower. I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for. I give this mower a “great value for the money” rating.

You can read more about this Zero-turn lawn mower and order it online using this link PZT9000 Model 28875.
After you order it online you can pick it up at your nearest store and not get charged for shipping. You can get the mower delivered to your home from the store for a normal charge. Sears has a 30 day price guarantee so you can buy it, watch the sale ads and come into your local Sears and get the difference refunded to you.
NOTE: If you pick it up you will need a medium duty trailer to take this machine home. This machine is heavier than a lawn tractor or garden tractor. Don’t forget tie-down straps.
If you have the mower delivered it will have the deck attached. New for 2009, if you have gas available, the Sears stores that have their own delivery team will also start the mower and show you how to use it when they deliver it.

Hi everyone! I just want to let you know I will be making quite a few changes in the next few weeks getting this site ready for the 2010 reviews.
First: All of the 2009 tractors listed in the navigation to your right will be moving to a sub-menu. This will make room for the 2010 reviews.
Second: This year as soon as I get specifics, I will let you know about each 2010 machine. Then when I get to see the tractors in February, I will go over the points I like and the points I don’t like. Finally, around April 15th I will get a chance to test drive and give you a complete review. Living this far north, we don’t get the snow off the ground until then.
You have come to trust my opinion and reviews of the Craftsman mowers and I’ll also review Husqvarna, Snapper, and Yard Man in detail. I’ll let you know my thoughts on the other tractors like Cub Cadet, Poulan and White when I get the chance to see them this year. (Hopefully, I can spend more time reviewing the John Deere line-up)
I don’t have a TroyBilt dealer within 100 miles of me and the Kubota, Simplicity, and New Holland dealers are over 30 miles away so I won’t get too much of a chance to review them.
Third:
Buyers: The primary reason for this site is to help you pick the best lawn tractor, yard tractor, garden tractor, or compact tractor for you. Everything about this site is designed to help you make the best decision on what tractor and attachments you should buy.
You are always welcome to ask questions about machines. Please be specific and tell us what models you are considering, where you live, the rough size and shape of your lawn, and how familiar you are with using lawn tractors.
Owners: As always you are welcome to tell us how you like your mower. Please be specific in telling us about the good points and bad points.
Manufactures and Dealers: You are welcome to write detailed descriptions (not sales fliers) of your products and help us determine what size and type of lawn your particular model of tractor is designed for. Please go to the “Guest Post” tab on the top of this page to read more. You are also welcome to comment on problems and solutions when we get into those areas this year.
A Few Highlights:
Craftsman has many new and exciting changes this year. The mower line has changed to reflect what you have been asking for.
Husqvarna has changed their estate series a lot this year.
Yard Man is developing a great new service network for their mowers and you won’t have to go to Wally World anymore to buy them.
John Deere is having a contest to win a customized John Deere 4020. Big Buck Give Away Grand Prize – A classic 4020 customized by Chip Foose.
