Craftsman PTY 9000 Model 28970 24 HP 42 inch Professional Yard Tractor Review

This Tractor Has Been Replaced with the Craftsman Premium CTX Tractors!  The new tractors are a lot heavier duty and have many more of the features you requested!

Craftsman Professional Model 28970 24 hp 42 inch

Craftsman Professional Model 28970 24 hp 42 inch

The PYT 9000 model 28970 comes with the Briggs & Stratton 24 hp ELS V twin engine. It features a heavy duty 42 inch precision cut deck, Electric clutch,  deluxe analog gauges, and tricked out front bumper.

The 42 inch deck is a made of thicker steel than the decks on the red and gray Craftsman mowers.  The deck is vented on the top to allow more air into the deck allowing the airflow of the cutting blades to stand the grass up better.  This is the best cutting deck I know of in a consumer mower.

If you want a decent mower that will mow 2 acres lawns well and can handle a snow thrower well this is one of the best mowers in the Craftsman lineup.

Specs:

Premium hydrostatic/ automatic transmission with fender control

24 hp Briggs & Stratton ELS (Extended Life Series) V-Twin Engine

Heavy duty 42″ precision cut deck with 4 adj. gauge wheels. Spring loaded deck lift system. Washout port on deck.

Electric clutch for ease of engaging the blades

Cast iron front axle., Bumper included, Deluxe gauges

High-back seat with automotive style adjustable seat system

2 year full warranty (manufacture defects only), 5 year frame/front axle, optional 3 yr Protection Agreement (covers all of the lawn tractor including wear and tear, labor, and attachments bought with the mower)

Pros:

The BIG question is:  Is this the PYT 9000 Model 28970 worth 300 dollars more than the YT 4000 Model 28927?  Yes, the heavier deck, larger rear tires, electric deck clutch, free bumper and the Briggs ELS engine make it easily worth the extra cost. I think the 28970 represents a good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time.

As you know I like Kohler engines, but Briggs & Stratton has really produced a great motor in the Extended Life Series.  The Briggs engineers I know are proud of this motor and feel it is the best motor Briggs has ever produced and maybe the best motor for lawn tractors in production today.  The ELS motor  features  advanced debris management, anti-vibration system, chrome plated exhaust valve, Dura-Bore Cast Iron Sleeve (cylinder liner), full pressure lubrication with spin-on oil filter, heavy-duty upper bearing, and automotive style oil fill tube and dipstick.

This yard tractor is capable of handling all the non-ground engaging attachments Sears offers including a snow blade and snow thrower.

Cons:

Do not confuse the PYT 9000 with a commercial mower.  While this mower is built better than the normal consumer mower it does not have the features or the life expectancy of a true commercial machine.  (No one makes a commercial “lawn tractor”)  Commercial mowers have 7 gauge, 5 inch deep decks and 1/4 inch thick box tube frames.

There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it is a good quality mid-sized riding lawn mower designed to mow lawns well. It is heavier built than a normal consumer mower. I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for. It is capable of pulling a wide range of attachments.

After you use your new mower for a while, come back and tell us how well you like your Craftsman PYT 9000! (scroll down for the comment section)

Do you know the weight of this mower? Mine is running strong with about 450 hours on it. I have had to repair the steering linkage gear and shaft from the steering wheel, as excessive play finally made me want to replace it, but finished it in short time. I have also had to replace spindle, as bearing wore out. Got new one off of ebay. OK, but not as good of quality. Next mower might be Cub Cadet xt1 Enduro 46. I hope they are ok.

Paul, I have the MTD built 42in pyt9000 – 247.289800 model. It just stopped last week I traced down the fuse, replaced it and was back in business for 12 minutes. When I shut it down to empty bags it was dead. Replaced the fuse, it started up but would not engage the PTO. I disconnected battery, pulled the fuse, reconnected battery. Battery shows 12.4 volts. I tested this at the fuse location and got the same voltage. I plugged in the fuse, it glowed orange and burnt out in 30 seconds.

I just bought a PYT9000 model 247.28981
but I don’t have the deck.
I wanted to know where i could find the deck already assembled, because buying each part will be to expensive. Even if it’s used.

Would you happen to know the part # for that belt?

Thank you sooooooo much! That is actually where I was going to start looking. The mower seems to go in reverse ok but it just doesn’t want to go forward……kind of hard to mow that way! Thanks again!

Question, does anyone know what a 2009 Craftsman PYT 9000 with a 24hp motor and a 42 in cut is worth. It also has a double bagger and a snow blower attachment. Machine has 121 hours on it. No visible damage, seems to run well.

Thank you for your help

Very strong running mower….BUT after only 4 1/2 years the hydrostatic transmission is slipping. After a lot of reading I’ve found that this is a common problem. The transmissions are sealed, so no way to check the fluid. No consumer serviceable parts. Now they tell me $700 for a replacement….NOT ! I’ll see if I can either find another one to fit or try to rebuild this one.

I got a 42″ cut – 24HP PYT 9000 (looks like the MTD one) as a “gift” from my father-in-law. He put 17 hours on it and decided he was too old to mow anymore. He’s 90. I mow his 1/4 acre lot and my 1/2 acre lot with this thing. These are our home-sites so I’d say I mow less than 1/2 acre altogether. It’s good, IMO, these aren’t made anymore. I REALLY wish I had my LT 1000 back!!! Initially I had to adjust the choke as I was afraid I was going to burn up the starter… Read more »

Rich fort Wayne Indiana I have a pyt 9000 2 blade 42 inch desk I have put a new battery in it as the one I took out was the original from my purchase in 2011. The problem is it does nothing. Does not turn over. My question is there a fuse or something I am missing.

G’Day All. I bought the PYT9000 with the 26h.p., 46″ cutting deck 5 years ago for use around approx 2 sloping acres of my home paddock of 5 acres on the New South Wales Central Coast in Australia. I was somewhat miffed that the V-belt didn’t align in a flat line from the Idler Pulleys with the PTO clutch pulley, but rather at a slight angle up to the PTO. When the blades needed replacing, I found that the spring-loaded (adjuster?) Pulley, runs hard-up, but below the lip of the fixed pulley, resulting in both pulleys effectively grinding the rims… Read more »

Hi …. I bought used used PYT9000 Model 247-289810 with the 54″ deck last year and have had constant issues with the deck belt falling off. After replacing the belt myself a couple times, I finally took it to a reputable local guy here with lots of experience fixing ride mowers and he has been unable to get it fixed properly to where it wont fall off. All pulleys and belt seems to be in good shape. He states that these models have chronic issues with belts staying on b/c of poor design(one super long belt that overlaps itself at… Read more »

Ive had the PTY9000 since 2009. When it runs, it runs great and cut perfect. Like I said, “when it runs”. Im have so much trouble initially starting this tractor … it just wont start without a shot of starting fliud. Ive replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, and even the fuel pump. Still needs that shot of starting fluid. Ive taken the carb apart and cleaned it several times. You guessed it ..needs that starting fluid shot to start. OK now its running but after an hour or so, it spits, studders, then dies. I use Seafoam in… Read more »

I’m having trouble with the wheels on the deck digging into the grass and dirt when I go in circles around my tree. It’s both apparent on flat ground and on slopes. What’s adjusted incorrectly? Front or rear wheels or something else?

I bought a Sears PYT9000 just a little over 2 years ago (the warranty is only 2 years). It had a number of small problems involving loose bolts but at the beginning of this season, it would not go forwards or backwards, even though everything else is normal. It’s as if the parking brake is engaged but it’s not. I called Sears for technical support or service but the lady said they cannot even render a guess on what the problem might be. This will be the last time I buy a Sears riding mower and I will think twice… Read more »

Please forgive my rambling response. My only excuse being that I must be going through the 5-stages of grief, and I am now in the anger stage. Coming to the decision that I will never buy another craftsman product is like someone in my family dying. When you come from a Sears family, it is hard to not imagine life without Kenmore & Craftsman. I just spent a whole lotta money on a John Deere Zero turn, because I could not trust Sears with my money any longer. I feel like I just stabbed my brother in the back .… Read more »

In response to the made in China comment. On my third try at trying to purchase a craftsman weed whacker earlier this year (3-weed whackers broke in a matter of 5-days), I was informed by the Lawn & Garden manager at Sears in Gurnee Il, that most craftsman lawn & garden equipment is assembled in China. Perhaps he was wrong, but the quality of craftsman lawn & garden products seems to have declined exponentially in the last few years and it would be surprising to me if he was wrong. I would not buy a craftsman worm drive saw this… Read more »

Hi! I have about 20 hours on my 28980. I like the cut, but the readout on the top has never worked. More importantly, it now will not start or turn over at all. After backing up to avoid hitting a post and exiting the seat, it is not getting any power. The manual states there is a fuse, but I find none. Instead, I have a relay HFV6. The mower deck seems to still be engaged, and I have found no way to disengage it. After a trip to the local Sears store, I found no relief to this… Read more »

I have read that this mower is a deal at $1699.00. Well, I walked into Sears to kill some time while wife was doing shopping at mall. Salesman approached me and said they had a closeout on a few riding mowers and said it was a “must see”. The y4000 that I have used for the last 20 years is getting little weak,so I thought I would take a look. PYT9000 marked at $999.00 and three year warranty out the door for $1447.00. This thing has been setting in my garage for two months and just started it today. Used… Read more »

I purchased Craftsman pty 9000 model 28970 24hp. 42inch professional yard tractor. 80 hours of use transmission front mounting bolts fell out cracked the frame where the axle mounts and tranny lost reverse.Sears replaced transmission reenforced frame. Has good power belts are not flipping off.Do you think this tractor is capable of handleing mowing 1 acre, pulling a yard sweep, towing small dump cart of sand, dirt, logs, malch and pushing snow? I realy like the machine I am not confident in the durabilaty of this machine after what I just expireinced I need a 2nd opinion. Thanks

Craftsman Pro? Paul, I own a 3/4 acre lot and it took me close to 2 hours to push a mover when I moved in 13 years ago so I bought a Sear Craftsman 42" MTD with a 13.5 HP Brigg Gold engine. The engine blew last week (no compression). The configuration is almost identical 13 year later to the MTD Ariens Model A175BG42 at Home Depot and it's still the same price of $999. I need a new tractor. My first thought to buy similar to what I had before. I was used to a manual transmission and having… Read more »

Local Sears has a last years 28970 model on clearance for $1335. From your comments, I take it this is a better deal than a Husquvarna YTH 21K46 at $1600 or YTH22V42 at $1600? (I am sort of partial to the 42 in cut as it will fit in my truck, though I could borrow a trailer for the 46 in.)

I purchased the 28970 model in May 2010 at quite a savings, it being last years model. I had the same problem others had mentioned with “hard to start,” issues. I found the throttle/choke cable needed to be moved about 3/4″ more toward the carburetor. The choke was not closing when the throttle was in choke position. Loosened the clamp on the motor, reset the cable, and clamped. It starts on the first turn of the key every time. My guess, Sears wants to get people in the habit of calling for service, or the guy or gal on the… Read more »

I also bought the 28970 this past fall. The only problem I have had with this mower is getting it level and getting it started. Very hard to start when cold. It never fires right up. Seems like its out of gas and then finally fires off. I dont know if the gas is evaporating out of the carb while setting up but this seems to be a defect in this mower. I wonder if installing a squeeze bulb in the fuel line would help. Seems to be a common problem with these mowers. Loading...

Paul Thanks for your previous reply. Spent the holiday trying to figure out what I like most. Seems the Deere X300 is the favorite. Frankly, there is little under 2K that does much for me. I like the Deere x300 build, motor, resale value, dealer service, 4 yr warranty. I don't like the $3k price tag. Cub is out, the 1000 series just looks like all the other entry level models out there. Figure, if I get into the mid 2s might as well pull the trigger on the X300. Only thing left is the Craftsman 29870 professional. $1900 is… Read more »

Paul,

I purchased the 28970 last september and have about 10 hours on it. I live in Florida and this time a year it's about 3 to 4 weeks between cuts. My issue is after two to three weeks I have to crank the starter for 30-40 seconds before it starts. Any ideas? The fuel lines are snug. I don't have this problem if it sits for just a week. It seems like it takes a long time to suck the fuel to the carb.

Thanks,

Pete

Seriously on the fence with my purchasing decision. Looking at the Cub Cadet lt1045, Deere 135SE, and the Craftsman 28970. Seems like the Craftsman is beefier than the others and at the same price. Cub and Deere have local dealers down the street and both offer solid service. Is the Professional craftsman that much stronger than the deere and/or cub? I am only mowing .5 acre but want this mower to l-a-s-t and am always afraid when anything is entry level…

would you recommend the service plan?

thanks

Bought my pyt9000 in February 2009, with a plow, for the snow we had coming. The clowns at SEARS screwed up my delivery 3 times. Left me porched 3 times! Anyway, it was springime when it finally came, and have enjoyed its power and reliability.

Only problem is lately it take 3-4 turn-of-the-key for it to start. Any idea why?

Paul I put the new belt on this weekend and it seems to have fixed it. I am not sure why it only lasted 29 hours but its not slipping a bit now. I have washed it off a few times but I would not think that would cause undo wear or stretch on the belt?? I do like the thought that went into removing the deck. It was very easy to remove. The drive belt on the other hand, well lets just say it wasn't the easiest thing I have ever done. The tensioner was in good shape and… Read more »

Returned first mower(PYT 9000) and Sears delivered a new replacement. one month later the battery was dead and the hour meter was fried. Again, it took Sears three tries before they sent the correct parts. In the process of this repair I discovered one nut stripped and sitting on the end of the bolt ( 1 1/2 inches from being tightened) and another bolt missing the nut entirely. I am wondering what I might find in the future. I wish I had asked for a refund instead of a replacement. Two mowers, four service calls and lots of frustration. Also… Read more »

My second PYT 9000 quit chargingthe battery and the useage/hour meter does not work. This one only had about 6 or 7 hrs on it. I don't know if I want a repair or a refund. I'm losing confidence in this model after returning the first due to problems and already having trouble with the second. Also have not received rebate due to rebate center not understanding that I'm on my second tractor and did not receive a cash register receipt for the replacement. It's all been very frustrating.

Hey Paul- thanks for all your help with and opinions on the craftsman mowers. It's helped a lot. I still have a couple questions though. 1. I was considering the yt 3000 6 speed manual because I have a couple steep hills on my property. I read that it would be better to have a manual trans to select the amount of torque used- how do you think the PYT 9000 would hold up? Can the PYT 9000 hydro trans hold up to steep grades? 2. When ordering through sears website, they have a special running for a discounted price… Read more »

Just spotted the 28970 on the Craftsman web site for $1,699. I thought it was a typo. I called the Sears store in Murphy, NC and they accepted my order at that price. That's over $750 cheaper than list. The salesman that took my order didn't believe it either.

I just bought the 28927 and mowed about 1/2 acre. I got a flat tire on the sidewall from going over cactus. Transmission makes funny noise in reverse. Tall weeds bent the lower front plate below the hood infront of the lower engine. Did a great job cutting down 18″ tall Yucca but seemed to lack enough power for my road side grade. Deck wash works good. I decided to trade it for the 28970 as it has bigger wheels and better engine. The sign in the store says that the 28970 can accept ground engagement tools. I went ahead and ordered this tractor after reading your comments/review and visiting my local Sears store. It looks well-built and it easily fits my larger than normal frame…which is something worth mentioning. The steering wheel appears to be more vertical than the JD, etc., and this allows for more room for larger "spare tires". I will be using it for mowing an average size lawn and that is all I plan to use it for…and I do take care of my equipment so I hope that this will last me for years to come. Paul,

you could be right about the transmissions being different. The catalog lists them the same, but looking at the transaxle (brouse subcomponents) on sears 'parts direct' they look completely different. I'm comparing PTY 9000 Model# 917289700 and YT 4000 Model# 917289270 .

The PTY uses a K46BA TRANSAXLE made by 'tuff torq' I think.

I've got no idea what transaxle is in the YT model, but it does look serviceable(I like that), where as the K46BA is not.

Where did this model come from?…very similar in specs to the PTY 9000 Model 28970.

Maybe its last years version of the PTY 9000 Model 28970,,,price looks reasonable at 1699.88
