What I Like!

Half of you who buy a Craftsman tractor this year will buy a YT 3000 or YT 4000.  The leading consumer magazine and I have rated these mowers as a “Best Buy” and with the new Turn Tight Technology I feel they are the “best mower for about $1500.”   This is the best Craftsman for value, cut, durability and overall satisfaction for your typical suburban yard.  Basically the YT 3000 and YT 4000 series are available with 42 or 46 inch decks, single cylinder or twin cylinder motors, manual or hydrostatic transmissions, and fender or foot control speed controls. Please read my reviews of all the YT models so you can find the best mower for you.  Over the last 2 years I have mowed with both the 42 and 46  inch decks and they cut as well or better than any other mid-sized deck.  With correct blades for your lawn the fully vented decks have good lift for poor lawns and get rid of the grass evenly and quickly for well kept lawns.  With premium mulching blades and a mulch cover they mulch well.  With hi-lift blades both decks bag very well.

Craftsman YT 3000 46 inch 21 hp Riding Lawn Tractor Model 28852

My Review:

Priced at about $400 less than the highly comparable D120 John Deere and $300 less than the LTX 1042 Cub Cadet, this Craftsman is one of the best values on the market today.  This model features the new Craftsman Turn Tight Technology,  step through operator’s platform, oil pump lube engine with oil filter, and a 46 inch deck that has been rated a Consumer Reports Best Buy. (2009 Model 28724)

The 28852 has the fender control hydrostatic transmission.  This transmission is easy to use and will perform well for mowing and medium duty yard tasks.  If you are replacing your old Craftsman that had fender controls this is the 2011 mower for you.  If you are new to mowers you may want to look at the YT 4000 series which feature foot controls. (it drives more like your car)

If you want a mower that will mow 1/2 to 2 acres well, handle a snow blade, and all the non-ground engaging attachments this is a great choice for you.  This tractor is heavy enough to handle moderately hilly and rough lawns.  There are other mowers in the Craftsman lineup that will mow faster, or pull more, but this is a great all around mowing machine.  This lawn tractor is one riding mower that will work well for your suburban lawn.

I like the mid-size YT 3000 series.  I think they represent a good value and a machine that if taken care of properly will last you a long time. If I didn’t have 34 inch gates to go through on my own yard I would seriously consider this model for myself.

This yard tractor is capable of using all the non-ground engaging attachments Sears offers including a snow blade.

Cons:

The YT 3000 is heavy enough, but I recommend going to a twin cylinder motor (YT 4000)  if you want to attach a  snow thrower.   You will wish you had bought a larger engine for snow throwing.

Final Thoughts:

I personally feel the new Turn Tight Technology this yard tractor changes the game for just about all residential yard owners.  For most of you this will mow as quickly as a residential zero-turn.  It is easier to drive, is easier on your lawn and less expensive than the comparable zero-turn models.  There is no “learning curve” like there is with a zero-turn. It will handle slopes that the residential zero-turns won’t.  And………it will pull stuff!

There are very few negatives with this mower as long as you understand that it is a good quality mid-sized mower designed to mow lawns well.  Take care of it (do the normal maintenance all lawn mowers need) and it will last you a long time.  I like this lawn mower for what it is designed for.  With the Turn Tight Technology and at around $1499 on sale it is a great value.

Love my 2011 VT3000, except that I’m on my third set of front tires. They seem to go bald in the middle. Today I once again the tires needed to be replaced and the the PSI stated on the tire is not to exceed PSI 30. After searching the net to no avail, does anyone know what the proper PSI for the front tires of this machine is??

Does the yt3000 come with a front roller on the deck?? There is a bracket that looks like it is for a wheel or roller. I cannot get my deck to raise any further in the front. Something is wrong. I have adjusted it but it is still too low in the front. To mow I had to lower the side rollers to ride the ground.

I have a craftsman turntight 21 hp Briggs and Stratton platinum xxd motor 46 inch deck. I have a vibration when I turn mower deck off and tractor smokes blue smoke out of exhaust it’s like the gas can’t be in tank for more than a couple of weeks. I drain after couple weeks if it smokes replace with new and it’s fine. Also tractor burns a lot of oil. I’m always topping it of between mows. I use just 10w30 oil. I keep tune ups on it, spark plug gas filter oil change and filter and air filter. Loading...

Huntsville, AL : Bought the Briggs YT3000 42,, in 2012. AT 114 HRS I had to change the head gasket. Briggs said they have no data of a problem but the net bloggs indicate different. Maybe the problems occur just after the 2 year warranty expires (my case). Folks the oil and filter has been changed every 25hrs the air filter checked and/ or changed also. The areas I mow are mostly flat, so the machine has not had a rough life. 114 hrs and head gasket goes. Could be why Briggs dropped the bore from 3.7 to 3.56 –a… Read more »

Hi Paul,
We are looking at a 2013 yt 3000 model B&S platinum series engine. They have it on sale but I don’t think they are priced at the 2013 price? They say the original price was $1865.99 and the sale is $1379.88. would this be correct? What are your thoughts.. is this still a good choice or not? I read alot about vibration issues. Are there any other concerns? Can you help with this please?
Thank you Rachael

Bought it in Sept. of 2013 got it home and it vibration was very very bad, called the store they said a service man would be here in about 2 weeks. I said I would load it up and return it, next day the service man was here. Both shafts was bent, it is better but still is bad. Store salesman said it was a rider and they would do this. I have had 4 riders not like this one, but it is my… Read more »

Having some traction issues with this model on a St. Augustine grass lawn in with a sloping back yard in FL. I’m considering putting Carlisle All Trail 20X10-8 on the rear but I’m concerned about clearance on the right rear. From the spec. measurements it looks like it will be a pretty close fit, but it would be great to find out for sure before I buy the tires.

Please Help!! My 8 year old Murray 46inch/21 hp Briggs & Stratton finally croaked!! I went to Sears and purchased the YT-3000 21hp/46 inch (turn-tight. Read the manual and followed the instructions regarding adjusting the tire pressure and purging the transmission. Started the engine..no problem. Rode around the yard to get used to the hand levers (old mower had a foot pedal), put it in neutral but it continued to “jerk” forward. I then engaged the deck and all #*@* broke loose (literally). VERY STRONG vibration and a “rattling” sound from the deck. I contacted Sears and 10 days later… Read more »
