Hello Paul
My wife and I are looking ahead to our purchase of some property in Otsego County NY, north of Cooperstown. I have been researching options for lawn mowing and snow blowing., and that is how I found your website. Thank you for the informative and detailed information
The property we will buy has 5-6 acres of lawn to mow. (It is just under 13 acres total). It is fairly level, with a few modest slopes. The current owner was using a commercial grade Ferris mower (not sure which model). For snow clearing, I will need to manage 1/10-mile gravel driveway. Again, no slopes to deal with. (the current owner had a blade mounted to the front of his Jeep.)
I am moving from Michigan, so I have experience with winter. I have not managed a property of this since when I was a kid. I have never operated a ZTR mower. I do have experience with snow blowers.
I am leaning toward ZTR mowers so that I am not spending too many hours mowing. Going to ZTR means I will also need to purchase a separate snow blower. (Vs. buying a lawn mower and snow blower combo)
For the lawn mowing
I have contacted local farm equipment/lawn and outdoor dealers in my area for advice. One local dealer has suggested the Cub Cadet Pro Z 560 KW. Another dealer has suggested the Hustler 60” FasTrak
For snow clearing
Local dealers have suggested Cub Cadet 2X 30” Max and 3X 30” HD
I look forward to your follow up.
Paul
Hi Pete, The Hustler FasTrak is plenty for 5-6 acres. The Cub Cadet Pro Z is almost twice the price and you don’t “need” that much mower. The only reason I would look at the higher priced Cub Cadets is if you have slopes to mow and wanted the steering wheel version. For example, the PRO Z 154 S EFI is an easy to use zero-turn that work great on hills.
The Cub Cadet 2X 30″ Max is a good value snowblower that will handle the heavier snows you get and I do recommend it. Again the 3X snow blowers are not the best choice for your area. The 3X 30 in particular has the smaller 12-inch auger/impeller so it will clog more easily. If the dealer convinces you that you need a 3-stage buy the 3X 30″ MAX Snow Blower instead. Like the 2X, the 3X has the larger 14-inch impeller and front auger.
Two passes with a 30-inch snow blower will clear a 9-foot path on your driveway. That’s almost 1/2 mile of walking each time. If you are planning on also getting and ATV or UTV you may want to consider getting a plow for it for the snows that are less than 6 inches. It will save you a lot of time.
