New 2020 Toro Titan Zero-Turn Mowers!
Toro has refreshed all of the residential zero-turn mowers for 2020! They have made the different models much easier to understand to help you decide which one is best for you. They have improved the ergonomics, added much-needed features and made improvements to decks and the mower itself.
This article will explain the Titan Series Zero Turn Mowers.
Toro has simplified the residential model lines for 2020 into three series. The TimeCutter, Titan, and Z Master. The TimeCutter line is the one most of us need. It is designed to cut perfectly your residential lawn. The Titan line is the one most of us want for acreages and is built heavier to handle lawns and pastures. The Titan line is not only a high-end residential but also an entry-level commercial line. It will handle all your grass cutting needs. If you spend more than 2-3 hours mowing every week the Titan is the line you want. The Z Master is a commercial mower that also works well for large residential properties.
MyRide is available in the TimeCutter, Titan and Z Master lines.
If you are mowing a nice finished lawn and don’t need this heavy-duty of a mower check out the Toro TimeCutter series
Titan Series Zero Turn Mowers.
I’m going to write about all the features first and then I’ll list the models and the best places to buy them.
The Titan Series is available through The Home Depot, Tractor Supply, ACME Tools and your local Toro Dealer.

Titan: The Titan series is designed for finished lawns and pastures. Most of you reading this article will find the Titan is the best choice for your large suburban yard and small acreages. You can get the perfect cut on your lawn and also go out and mow your pasture or paddock. (Max height of cut is 4.5 inches) (The Titan and Z Master series are designed for both finished lawns and rough pastures)
Speed: Most brands will tell you that their mower will travel at 8 mph but most will not give you a good cut at that speed. The Titan series will mow at 8.5 MPH. The combination of a great cutting deck, 18,900 fpm blade tip speed, heavy-duty transmissions, and the optional MyRide suspension will let you mow up to 3.5 acres per hour with a 48-inch deck and up to SIX acres per-hour with the 60-inch deck. (5 acres at 20% overlap, 6 acres at 100% cut)
Transmissions: The Hydro-Gear ZT2800 ZTR transmissions with charge pumps will be very reliable on these models. Why? The ZT2800 transmission is plenty strong for this mower and will last years mowing under any conditions including slopes. The charge pumps help to keep the transmissions full of oil and help to reduce the shock to internal components of the transmission when working at high speeds and quick maneuvering tasks such as trimming and going over a curb. The ZT2800 transmissions are fully serviceable and repairable.
IronForged™ Decks: The Titan series offers one deck with three different sizes. These decks are designed to give you the best cut, the best mulching, and built to take a pounding. All decks are fabricated and have Toro’s industry-leading IronForged™ Cutting System. The fabricated decks are all 10 gauge (3/32 inch) steel with reinforced edges, wear strips and spindle areas. The lift system is strong enough that you can step on the deck to get on and off. The deck sizes are: 48, 54 and 60-inch fabricated decks. All models have adjustable front anti-scalp wheels. Flexible, poly discharge chute and 18,700 feet-per-minute blade tip speed.
Six-inch heavy-duty cast aluminum sealer bearing spindles are tough enough to handle pasture mowing and trouble-free. No need to remember to grease these spindles!
(FYI – the 10 gauge steel-reinforced deck is regularly used on commercial mowers. There are very few residential mowers that use deck steel this thick)
Anti-Scalp wheels that won’t catch on stuff: All anti-scalp wheels are height adjustable including the front center roller. The left anti-scalp roller is indented from the edge of the deck and the bracket is curved. This allows you to get close to objects like a chain link fence without the anti-scalp wheel getting caught in the fence. This is a big deal for me because I have a lot of chain link fence to mow along and over 200 feet of landscape beds that have glacier rock edges.
Bullnose front deck edge: One feature of these decks that most other reviewers don’t mention is all of the Titan decks have a bullnose front edge. This edge gives you a lot more strength at the front to protect the deck from caving in when you hit something solid. It also helps the deck to ride over stumps, sidewalks, etc. if the deck is set too low.
Cast Aluminum Stomp Pad: A grate attached to the decks lets you keep your grip and remove excess mud from your shoes. The deck is attached more sturdy than many other brands so you can actually step on the deck to get on and off the mower.
Frame: 10 gauge 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 inch square tube frame for extreme strength and rigidity. (This is a commercial-grade frame and most other brands do not use this thick of steel at this price point) The front casters are the heaviest I’ve seen on a residential mower.
Foot Lift Assist: The deck height is very easy to adjust. Just step on the foot pedal and switch the pin location to adjust the height. If you need to go over an obstruction that is higher than what you are mowing at just step on the pedal to raise the deck.
Tires: Large 13X6.5 front tires help you get the best cut and a better ride. 22 inch rear tires are the widest available for the size of the decks and offer great traction and floatation. The 22 inch rear tires are also sized to give you up to 8.5 mph mowing speed and won’t overload the transmissions mowing slopes. The front caster wheels are smooth and very wide so you can mow in wet conditions or sandy soil without rutting your lawn.
Engines: The engines are offered the 24.5 HP Toro Commercial and 21.5 HP Kawasaki FR Series depending on the model. Toro Commercial engines are quickly proving themselves to be one of the best engine lines in the industry for residential use. Easy to replace air filters. It comes with a very easy to use no-tool oil drain tube so you can easily drain the oil into a container and never get any on the mower itself. Even the oil filter is easily accessible.
Canister Air Cleaner: High-quality commercial-grade canister air cleaner on the Toro engines. The filter cartridge is easy to remove without tools for cleaning and replacement.
Step-Through Front or MyRide:
48, 54 and 60-inch models are offered with step-through fronts or MyRide Suspension.
Step-Through: Only one other manufacturer offers and easy on step through front. (Country Clipper)
Getting on and off the Titan step-through is very easy. The front footrest has a cut-out so you can get on and off the machine from the front. No more stepping across the deck to get on. There is an optional hand bar available to assist you if in getting on the mower and getting up out of the seat.
Commercial MyRide: While the step-through series is very comfortable Toro also offers an even better ride with the optional MyRide. The unique MyRide suspension isolates you from the bumps, ruts and the general body beating ZTRs will give when mowing rough ground at high speeds. Unlike other manufacturers that suspend the entire mower including the deck the MyRide only suspends the operator. This allows the mower to give you the best cut and the best traction when mowing rough turf.
Easy to adjust MyRide. The MyRide suspension completely allows the operator to ride independently of the mower itself. This allows the mower deck and tires to run with the ground contours giving you the best possible cut. The MyRide system is so good you can ride this mower for hours and hours and not feel “beat up.” I highly recommend the MyRide.
Note: Other mowers with front and rear axle suspension allow the deck to bounce giving you a wavy or not so good of a cut. The MyRIDE is different. The operator (you) are suspended – not the entire mower. This gives you a much more level and even cut. If your lawn is rough you can quickly see the difference in the cut between the MyRide mowers and other brands that have springs and shocks right on the axles. Beware of the other brand’s hype. Just because it’s patented doesn’t mean it’s better…
Styling: Wet Spray Blocking rear fenders are designed to keep mud and moisture off you and the mower give full all-around visibility to see when trimming. Cup Holder and tray for small items on all models. Tool Cubby on step-through models
Seat with Arm Rests: Handcrafted Seat with Arm Rests gives ultimate padding and back support with a handcrafted high-back seat with armrests and bullhorn logo. The seat is adjustable for tall and short people.
Fuel Capacity: 5 gal / 18.9 L on all Titan Models!
Hydraulic Dampeners: Hydraulic Dampeners on the steering levers smooth out the operation. No jerkiness when learning to drive it. (These dampeners are critical if you have shoulder and/or back issues. They allow you to operate the mower for hours without your shoulders becoming sore)
Rubber Discharge Chute: The side discharge chute is made of rubber – not poly or plastic. You can bang the chute into curbs, trees, and other obstructions and it always bounces back to its original shape. It will look like new for years even with teenagers using your mower…
Mechanical Parking Brake: Manual parking brake that locks the transmissions using cogs means the unit will not roll once the brake is set.
Warranty: 3-year / unlimited hour residential warranty. 3-year/300 hour for commercial use.

Scott Russell
Hello. I’ve Been mowing apx 2 1/2 acres every 2 weeks for the last 3 years, splitting the time between 2 cub cadet xt1 46 inch lawn tractors. I want o update with a zero turn. Been mainly looking at Cub Cadet ZT 1 50, Toro ZT Time cutter 50 And a Hustler 48 Raptor SD. Trying to stay under 4000.00 these are dealers that are within a 30 mile radius. The models all have the kawasaki motors. Most yards i mow have St Augustine grass. iwould appreciate your input/advice. Thanks
Paul
Hi Scott, My first choice for your grass type would be the Toro. The Lawn Care Nut has been using one and it’s doing a fantastic job. Check out his video here:
The Cub Cadet is also popular with homeowners down south.
brady
can you please explain to me how the toro titan can mow at 8.5mph when the ZT2800 specs say up to 8mph? I actually just bought one of these to do my normal residential lawn but to also cut the retention pond area behind the house that the village isn’t maintaining.
Paul
Hi Brady, The long explanation: For the same reason you have to recalibrate the speedometer in your truck when you install taller tires.
1. Residential zero-turns typically use 18-20 inch rear tires.
2. The ZT2800 is a residential grade transmission
3. The Toro Titan uses 22 inch rear tires
4. Hence the faster, listed speed.
Brady
thank you for your reply but it brings up a follow up question. I found your website researching JD mowers. You said you can’t recommend the largest D or E john deere because the tire size is too big for the hydros. Does that issue apply to the Titan
Paul
Hi Brady, No, that only applies to lawn tractors.
Nick
Thanks for all the great info!
I’ve been on the verge of buying my first ZT for almost two years now but still havent pulled the trigger!
I’ve got about 2 acres i push mow now thats mostly flat with just a few obstacles, and about once every 4-6 weeks my uncle bushhogs another 5 acres that use to be bailed for hay. The grass grows tall and very quickly. Its about 12” right now and I’ve never seen it under 5” to get a good read on the land. It doesnt seem overly bumpy but me being such a novice user, I dont want to accidentally find a bump and screw something up on my mower. Another concern is that I dont know how to fix ANYTHING and any slight repairs would be an extreme pain in the butt for me to get someone to fix. So basically I’d rather spend a little more and be safe rather than sorry.
Last year i was certain I was going to go with the Ultima ZT2 60”.
This year I have been leaning more towards Toros, and the more reading I’ve done it seems like you would recommend the Titan models for my property (with MyRide?)
(I’ve also have a local dealer in town who sells Gravelys and saw recently you were high on the Ariens IKON XD!!)
Ughhh soo many questions! I’m so stressed!
Any help/advice would be more than welcome!
Thanks for all your input!
Paul
Hi Nick, 1. If you don’t mind spending the money my first choice would be the Gravely ProTurn Z. It’s a commercial mower with a commercial engine and an extra-wide stance. It will handle the field without a whimper and mow your lawn perfectly.
2. The second choice is the Gravely ZT HD. It has all the features of the Proturn Z but has a residential engine. Will the engine ever give you problems? No.
Both of those mowers will ride well out in the field. Both mowers will mow the taller grass better than the Toro Titan. Just remember, none of the zero-turns will mow 24 inch tall grass clean on the first pass but if you mow when the grass is 12 inches or less these mowers will do the job quickly and well.
3. Toro Titan with MyRide or Gravely ZT XL. If you have a limited budget the Toro or Gravely ZT XL are good choices. They have good transmissions and are both well built. The Gravely again is a little better with the taller grass. The Gravely also uses 4-point suspension on the deck so if your field is really rough it will give a more even cut.
I don’t recommend the Arien IKON XD for your lawn. It has the “normal” ZT2200 transmissions and I don’t feel they will hold up for years like the other machines I listed. By-The-Way, the Gravely ZT XL and the Ariens IKON XD are the same mower – the Gravely just has the heavier duty transmissions.
Nick
Thanks for the quick reply!
Are there any other added benefits (other than the extra cutting inches) in going with a 60” vs a 52”?
Paul
Hi Nick, No, big differences. But, I always ran 60-inch decks because they really do cut down on the mowing time.
