2016 Craftsman Lawn Tractor Line-Up

I always start the year off with Craftsman. Craftsman has 11 new models for a total of 32. There will be four articles covering all the models. A few opinions – but mainly just the facts as given to me by Craftsman.

2016 Lawn Tractors: This Article: Small yards, great value mower. Good engines, standard 18 inch radius steering. Will handle bagging and light pull behind attachments.

2016 Garden Tractors: Read About them here: Large areas to mow, big tires for rough lawns, 4 of the 5 models will handle all attachments including ground engaging attachments like harrows and pull-behind tillers.

2016 Yard Tractors: Read About them here: Normal size lawns, easy to use, better engines, 5 or 6 inch Turn-Tight Steering. Will handle most non-ground engaging attachments.

2016 Craftsman Zero-Turn Mowers: The article will come later: Craftsman now has residential, Craftsman Pro and Steering wheel versions!

2016 Craftsman Lawn Tractors: Good Value, Great Cutting Riding Mowers.

Craftsman has five models of lawn tractors that are great for people on a budget with smaller suburban lawns. All of these have been around for a couple of years and have proven good, economy riding mowers. These mowers all get good marks for how well they cut and with minimum preventative maintenance will last you a long time.

Hi Paul, 26 months ago i bought a Craftsman 203900 lawn tractor after reading about it on your site and really liked it until it stopped working. It only has 33 hours on it and won’t move when the pedal is pressed and it’s 2 months out of warranty. This appears to be a common problem and the result of a defective transaxle. Are you familiar with this issue and is there any remedy? I mow a flat 1/2 acre in north Texas and my previous Murray mower was running fine after 15 years of mowing the same tract. I… Read more »

Can you tell me who builds the Craftsman Pro 20440 tractor? Something I read made me think it was Cub Cadet. I like this tractor, but if I can’t find out who builds it, I’ll just go buy another John Deere. Thanks

Paul, Great information and options. I looked at them all and see why you chose them. I should have added earlier, and need because of some narrow paths between trees and other obstacles, to look at 42″ or 46″ decks. I prefer the 46″ for trimming more closely with the deck sticking out a bit. A 42″ deck would be great for avoiding obstacles, but I think most are an inch or two narrower than the stance of the tractor wheels. So, in looking at your other posts and reviews as well as considering your recommendations here, I am looking… Read more »

Paul,

I left 2 questions on 7 June. In response, I guess, I received an email asking me to take a survey and receive a hat. I really don’t wear hats. I never saw a reply to either question. Is it that my questions weren’t interesting? Is it possible for you to provide responses or inform me that responses are not forthcoming?

That Purolator Boss filter is Puralator’s top of the line which does have the bypass.

Hi Paul. I stumbled oto your site while researching Intek 18.5 hp engines, which is what my Murray Select 42″ riding mower- (now made by Husqvarna). I’m reading about all kinds of problems about these engines concerning head gaskets. My goal is to try and beat the odds by applying ampe preventative maintenance. Online forums state to adjust valves annually…..but suprisingy, my manual states to “check” valves only if a problem arises. What say you? And lastly, B@S states in the manual to use 30 weight, 10W-30, or synthetic 5W-30 oil. I have already changed my oil (after ony 3… Read more »

Hi Paul,

You have a great site, I love it! Today I bought through my Sears Hometown outlet a Craftsman 20381 (Actual MDL #917.203811).
I have about 3/4 acre of flat lawn to mow with seven full size fir trees to mow around. I what this mower to last at least as long as my LT 1000 (13 years), no towing, but there might be a leaf picker upper down the line.
What can you tell me about its hydrostatic transmission MDL #T2-CDBE-5X1A-1BC1?
Please tell me how reliable is it? Tell me like it is!

Thanks!

Dennis

You are awesome! Thank you for your communications and professional attention.

Ordered the 42″ PRO this morning. Friends & Family Sale & new Sears MC with online coupons etc. brought price down to about $1457 before taxes. Also picked about $100 worth of Sears points for mulching, front bar and other needs later. Mower should be here Friday.

Will read-up on what to check/do when mower is delivered.

IN FL this black machine & seat will be hotter than JD but as you say it is a better machine!

Thank You!

John

Paul it seems craftsman has always been good for the money. Good cutting and ease of part available at good cost. However I am not sure if I should get a new craftsman or purchase a used yt 3000 model preferably in the 42″ cutting deck. I am really worried about all of these bad reviews on the single cylinder briggs platinum engine blowing head gaskets and or starting problems with customers complaining about smoke coming from the exhaust. have you found a superior engine in these models to be better? Or are these people just not taking care of… Read more »

Hi Paul, Really enjoy your website! Prior to your site, I have been almost frozen about making a decision about a replacement mower (contrary reviews and heavy marketing – steering) – guilty of overthinking purchase! We have: St. Augustine Grass, about 15,000 sq. feet of lawn, some slight slopes and live at Amelia Island, FL (NE FL – seasonal changes and 4-months of almost dormant conditions (1x per month vs. weekly). Want: excellent cutting, mulching ability and have great cut-height settings. Like the idea of Sears for home service but have Lowes, ACE & Home Depot nearby too. What size… Read more »

Paul, This is a great website with tons of information. All things considered would you recommend the Craftsman, Toro or Cub steering wheel zero-turn in the 42″ size? I live about 30 miles from all 3 stores (regular Sears store as well as Toro and Cub Cadet dealers) but don’t have a brand preference. I plan to mulch but it would be nice to be able to pull an aerator or lawn sweeper once in a while. Again I have 1 acre of grass (with 1/2 acre of wooded area in the back) in Williamsburg Virginia, walkout basement, rolling lawn,… Read more »

Hi Paul,
Does the steering wheel on the new Craftsman steering wheel zero-turn mower control the front wheels as well as the rear (like the Toro and Cub Cadet)?

Thanks,
Mike (SE Virginia, 1 acre, slight slope, walkout basement)
