Engines: Cub Cadet offers two residential series engines and two commercial series engines on the various Ultima ZTX mowers. These engines will all give you years of use with just basic maintenance.

Kohler 7000 series Pro: The 7000 series has quickly gained the reputation as one of the best residential lawnmower engines on the market. The Pro series V-twin OHV engine is known for reliable starting and exceptionally smooth, quiet operation.
Kohler® Confidant EFI V-Twin OHV is Kohler’s latest commercial engine. It offers the very best in fuel efficiency, reliability, immediate on-demand torque, and long life.
Kawasaki FR: The Kawasaki FR is arguably the most popular residential zero turn mower engine. It’s smooth, reliable and long-lasting.

Transmissions. Transmissions define what you can pull and how well the mower will last over the years mowing slopes. Cub Cadet uses three commercial-grade transmissions in the Ultima ZTX series and they are matched correctly to the ZTR and what you expect the mower to do. Cub Cadet sizes the transmissions in the different series for the weight of the mower, the rider, a bagger and how rough your lawn is.

(Ultima ZT3, ZTX4 Series) Hydro-Gear ZT 3100 up to 350 lb-ft, up to 8 mph, Total Weight 1200 LBS, Axle Shaft Diameter 1.125 in. Entry-Level Commercial, multiple lawns up to 10 acres a day.
(Ultima ZTX5 Series) Hydro-Gear ZT 3200 up to 470 lb-ft, up to 9 mph, Total Weight 1500 LBS, Axle Shaft Diameter 1.125 in. Standard-Duty commercial, multiple lawns up to 10 hours a day.
(Ultima ZTX6 Series) Hydro-Gear ZT 3400 up to 500 lb-ft, up to 10 mph, Total Weight 1600 LBS, Axle Shaft Diameter 1.125 in. Heavy-Duty commercial, You won’t be able to wear it out mowing residential lawns. Most commercial mowers in the $7000-$12,000 price range use this transmission.

Frame. Cub Cadet redesigned its entire residential line last year and upgraded the chassis to continuous, welded tubular steel. This gives you a frame that won’t flex or crack and gives you the best strength and durability. The Ultima ZTX is the strongest frame Cub Cadet has ever offered in a residential zero-turn.

ZTX4, ZTX5, ZTX6: 1.5″ x 3″ tubular steel frame with fully E-Coat lower frame and Triple Guard Corrosion Defense System™ protects against wear and tear.

Decks. All of the models in the Ultima ZTX series use a commercial rated deck. Although Cub Cadet doesn’t spell it out these decks are quite capable of going out and mowing your horse pasture, roadside ditches, and fences. With cutting heights as high as 4.75 inches they will let you cut the weeds, saplings the size of your thumb, and still leave the grass long enough for your livestock to graze.

ZTX4, ZTX5, ZTX6: Heavy-Duty Fabricated 10-gauge AeroForce Max™ fabricated steel / double plate reinforced spindle mounts / 7-gauge side wraps /skid plate.

(Be aware: ALL mower decks on zero-turn mowers are not designed to cut grass over 12 inches tall cleanly on the first pass. I usually mow a swath and turn right around and mow the same swath going the other way. Fabricated decks like the this AeroForce Max deck will clean cut on the second pass.) If you want to mow only once or twice a year I suggest pulling Acrease Rough Cut Mower from Kunz Engineering with your Ultima ZTX for those tasks.
