2018 Craftsman and Craftsman Pro Lawn and Garden Tractor Review

2018 Craftsman and Craftsman Pro Lawn and Garden Tractor Review

Craftsman has made quite a few changes in the Craftsman lawn tractor and Craftsman Pro garden tractors for 2018.  In particular, they have streamlined their offerings so the entire line is easier to understand. Their products continue to be the best in the industry for the price.

I’ll run through the entire rider, lawn tractor, and garden tractor line in this article starting with the least expensive models. I’ll give you quick comparisons to the other brands to help you find the best Craftsman for you.

Note: No matter what the news media wants you to believe – it’s business as usual at the Sears Lawn & Garden Department. Yes, Sears has closed stores but so has every other major retail chain. (My wife is very upset she no longer has a Macy’s within 150 miles) In fact, the only stores that I see doing really well nationwide are the Rural Lifestyle stores like Fleet/Farm, Acme Tools, Tractor Supply, and Blain’s Farm & Fleet. I know the news media has made everyone concerned about what Sears will morph into but I want to assure you that your Craftsman lawn equipment warranty and repair parts are separate from the drama you read about.  Sears Home Services and SearPartsDirect both are doing very well and will continue to operate no matter what the Sears Mall Stores and Sears.com change into.

Note: All links in the rest of this article will take you to Sears.com. There you can read more, check sales prices, special deals, purchase and set up delivery of your new Craftsman. Sears offers free delivery most of the time for any items over $1249.  They also offer a percent off, special financing, cash back points and other incentives to qualified buyers. When you click these links and buy from Sears.com I make a small commission from the sale.

So. let’s get started!

Rear Engine Rider

Model 29000 RER

Model 29000 RER

RER – NEW $999 Model 29900 Rear engine rider. The rider now has a new Craftsman 382cc Auto Choke engine. Just turn the key to start! 30-inch single blade, Foot Pedal Auto Trans. There will also be a mulch kit included with this riding mower. This is a great mower for small, flat lawns or areas that have 34 inch or larger gates.  (Does Not Cut in reverse) Please do not buy this small rider if you have slopes or mounds around trees greater than 10 degrees.  Buy Here: Craftsman 30 inch Model 29900

T1000 – Craftsman Economy 42 and 46-inch models.

The T1000 lawn tractors compare directly to the Troy-Bilt TB series, John Deere E100 and Poulan Pro Lawn Tractors

Craftsman economy models are the least expensive riders and the only economy riders from any of the brands that I recommend.  They are designed for first-time buyers who have small, flat, 1/4-1/2 acre lawns. You can pull a small yard cart and all will accept a mulch kit or 2 bin bagger.

The T1000 series are basic lawn tractors and will work well for small, 1/4 acre lawns that you mow every week. If you like to putt around your yard, pull a small cart to pick up sticks and leaves this is a good choice. It is not designed to mow long slopes or hills. You can attach a bagger or pull a sweeper. Craftsman does offer a mulch kit that includes the plug and mulching blades. If your lawn is very thick southern grass or very lush bluegrass/fescue I strongly suggest moving up to the T3000 or Craftsman Pro twin cylinder engines. Don’t let the cheap price fool you – these are capable, simple to use lawn tractors for your small yard.

Compares directly to the John Deere E110, Cub Cadet XT1 – 42 and Cub Cadet XT1 – 46

The T2000 single cylinder Craftsman Lawn Tractors are unique. They are the ONLY Craftsman lawn tractors with a fender controlled hydro (left fender). These are very good lawn tractors with an economical B&S Series Platinum single-cylinder engine. They will work for lawns up to one acre that you mow every week. If you pull a small cart to pick up sticks, leaves or a few bags of mulch this is a good choice. It is not designed to mow long slopes or hills. You can attach a 2 bin bagger. Craftsman does offer a mulch kit that includes the plug and mulching blades. If your lawn is very thick southern grass or very lush you may want to move up to the T3000 twin cylinder models. Moving up also gives you a foot control hydro.

T3000 – Replaces Craftsman Yard Tractor Series. 42, 46, 54-inch models. V-Twin Cylinder Kohler 7000 and Briggs & Stratton Platinum Engines.

Compares directly to the John Deere E160, E170, E180 and Cub Cadet XT1. Better engine than John Deere E120, E130, E140, E150

Craftsman has had a lot of overlap in this price range for many years and this year they have simplified it into only three lawn tractors. The 42 inch is a lawn tractor similar to the single cylinder models with the good Kohler 7000 series V-Twin, Automatic transmission, and high output 230 amp batteries. The 46 and 54-inch models use a more rugged frame and the long life Briggs & Stratton Platinum V-Twin engines. For the money, the 46 inch model 27333 will go down in history as one of the best cutting – best-priced lawn tractors on the market. I can’t wait for Consumer Reports to test it against the comparable John Deere and Cub Cadet lawn tractors.

NEW Model 27730 $1499. 42 inch. Kohler 7000 Elite 20HP V-twin. Foot Pedal Auto Trans. Buy Here: Craftsman 27330 42″ 725cc Kohler V-Twin Riding Mower with Smart Lawn Technology

The 46 and 54-inch lawn tractors have a reinforced deck, 12 cutting positions, 4 anti-scalp wheels, a huge 3-gallon fuel tank, cruise control, hour meter, 16-inch turning radius, Smart Lawn Technology, and B&S Platinum Twin Cylinder engines (full pressure with oil ports) These engines will last longer than other “full-pressure” engines found on the other brands. If you are mowing slopes of 15 degrees or more I strongly suggest this engine or the Kohler 7000 Elite found in the Craftsman Pro series. The deck height adjustment is no on the right fender so there will be fewer complaints about owners impaling themselves on the old left-mounted deck lift lever.

These new 46 and 54 inch models are built on the same strong chassis as the Craftsman Pro units. The hoods will no longer flop around like they did on the previous versions made by Husqvarna (If you want this heavy chassis in a 42-inch lawn tractor  – it’s the Model 27038 Craftsman Pro in the next section)

I can recommend the 46 and 54-inch models for a snow blade or snow thrower.

Pro Series Riders – Top of the line Craftsman lawn and garden tractors. 42, 46, 50, 54-inch models. Kohler 7000 Elite V-Twin Engines. Available Locking Rear Differential

Compares directly to the John Deere X300 and Cub Cadet XT2 lines. The 46 inch Craftsman Pro Model 27042 continues to be rated equal or better than all the other lawn tractors on the market both by myself and a leading consumer magazine. (Consumer Reports gives the 27042 the same rating as the X350-42 and costs $1000 less!)

I really can’t say enough good things about the Craftsman Pro Lawn & Garden Tractors.  Since their introduction in 2015, they have quickly become the best in the industry for reliability and build quality for the price. For 2018 Craftsman has two new models that help to round out the line. Owners and review sites have given the 46 and 50-inch decks rave reviews for cut quality, bagging, and mulching.

Same great features you know and love!

Hi Paul don’t see anything about the new Husqvarna’s. I was looking at the HUSQVARNA TS 348D it supposedly has the k66 tranny tuff-torq. Want this to be able to handle a snowblower and driveway drag also. We do have some light sloping on on the side yard. Do you think this is a good option or what else would you suggest thanks.

Thanks for the great content! Your page is awesome. I’m looking at the Craftsman Proseries 27038 for my lawn. I am in Georgia and have about 3/4 of an acre, but it has a pretty large hill at around a 15 degree slope in the backyard. I’m just concerned about the transmission not holding up if I go up and down that hill every week.

Is this a good tractor to buy for my lawn or should I be looking at a different one? My budget is maxed at around $1900.

Thanks!

Hi Paul, I’ve never owned a riding mower and am about to buy my first. I have 1/2 acre (mostly flat) with not that many obstacles to go around. Can you help me understand the benefit of Craftsman’s Tight Turn? Will it save time or makes mowing easier for me? One sales guy at Sears said it will save time with every pass that I need to turn around on because I won’t have to drive as far to turn around. Another sales guy says it won’t save time since I don’t have that much to go around. Which is… Read more »

Hi Paul, thanks for the informational reviews. This will be our first summer as homeowners so we are fairly clueless when it comes to what we will need for a mower. We are in northern Massachusetts on 2.8 open, mostly flat acres that used to be farmland (front yard slopes sideways a bit as garage is under house). I assume we need at least 46″ deck, but after that I’m not sure of the meaning of all the other specs! Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Paul, Nice to see all the effort and information, thank you! I am considering the Husqvarna TS 348D. Partly because the dealer/shop is only 30 miles away and he has it ($3000, Kohler motor). Sears, 30 miles away, has the 27055 for $3000. It is my second choice. Alot to mow here 15 miles from the Oregon coast. Bumps, some 10 degree slope, more bumps, more 8 degree slope, 2 flat large picnic areas. Out of the 75 acres there are a couple acres to mow but I ( my son and nephew ) would mow more if the… Read more »

Grass finally grew enough for its first real cut with my new 27042. I like the look and quality of the cut. A couple issues I wonder if there are solutions for: 1. I leveled the deck as you described in an earlier reply to me. If I level using the deck edge, the blades are off 3/4″ (used a Stens deck leveling gauge). I ended up leveling to the blade, but is that an indication something is not right? Big difference between blade and deck edge. 2. Bagging was terrible. At most, I had 1″ tall in some places,… Read more »

Hi Paul. Thank you for putting together this very useful info! Quick question: Currently Sears.com shows only $100 difference between the NEW Model 27046 and Model 27055. I have a ~2 acre property (1 acre flat and open, the rest with some obstacles and a lot of trees). I am about to pull the trigger but could not decide between the two considering the price difference. Any thoughts?

I also would like to buy a Craftsman pro lawnTractor from Sears. I live in Everett, WA
Are there any other repair services available other than Sears? There is a Town and Country (cub cadet dealer) in snohomish I think…do they repair craftsman tractors? has anyone had their Craftsman tractor repaired by a company other than Sears?

I am impressed with the reviews and info provided on the craftsman Pro 27042 and the price is right… my only hesitation is the terrible local reviews (western washington state) of the poor service response from Sears. Does anyone have experience with good response and service for their Craftsman lawn tractors in the Snohomish county area of Washington.
And is there any other good alternative other than Sears to having repairs done on a Craftsman pro tractor… do Town and Country repair Craftsman tractors?

Thanks for the info. I got the right mulch kit and it is too bad they did away with the easy blade replacement system. Seems to me to have been a good idea but maybe it did not work as well as expected. Anyway, I am looking forward to receiving the mower next week and will report my impressions.

Hi again Paul. I ordered the Pro model 27042, 46″ lawn tractor and it should be here by the middle of next week. In anticipation I started to look at Pro model videos on Youtube and found this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIEU2lRHeT8, which shows the “easy” blade replacement system they have on Pro models. However, I have not seen this advertised as a feature, unless I missed it. It certainly is a good idea but here is the problem – I ordered the mulch kit and the blades for it are star hole blades whereas this “easy” system uses round hole blades.… Read more »

Paul, your articles are best on the web. I am retiring a very old Craftsman manual transmission that I have used for towing a trailer, 4×8 high side often full of construction debris and landscape materials…mowing is secondary to me but a nice bonus…I am on a budget looking to stay around $2k. Am having a hard time understanding which of the New Craftsman’s are actual Garden tractors that would suit my needs. I read one of your other articles about don’t be fooled by low cost impersonators but it seems that in this article you are calling these garden… Read more »

My new 27042 wad delivered yesterday. Any tips on measuring blade height for deck leveling? How are you getting under the deck to measure blade height, especially on the left side? My deck came WAY out of level. One side is 1.5″ higher than the other. The back is 1″ higher than the front. The blades are 3″ off the ground when the deck is all the way up, not 4″. I set the control at 3″ and adjusted the blades to 3″. Now 2″ on the lever is 2.5″ at the blade. I expected to level the deck upon… Read more »

Paul, I bought the old 42″ Craftsman Pro PYT9000 back in 2011, based on many reviews – your included. It has been flawless but time to get another, possibly the new 46″. I wanted a Simplicity or Deere but after looking I simply could not justify the cost. I don’t know if you remember much about the 2011 model but in what ways is the 2018 an upgrade? They have many of the same features and I am particularly interested in any comparison of the two 24hp motors.

Paul thanks for your comments and knowledge. I am looking into a new mower and would appreciate your input.I have a JD 102 42″ cut< I know it is a Briggs single cylinder. I know it is over 10 years old. It is still running and cutting. It is a Dana transaxle 5 speed. I have between 1/3 and1/2 acre to cut. The front and sides have a lot of zoysias grass. It is mostly rolling ground, The back fescue on 10 to 15-degree slope. The back is cut mostly sideway except when going downhill on the long straight part.I read so much… Read more »

I have about 2 acres, semi rough terrain, steep incline on most of the back yard…I’m looking for a Garden Tractor with Diff Lock and have no idea which one to choose, this will be my first riding mower purchase. If it was you Paul, which would be your top 2 choices? Not concerned with the cost too much, although the Deere’s in this catagory are a bit steep.

Hey Paul, I am wondering your thoughts on something. It seems like at one point you was really big into CTV for mowers and I think Craftsmans use to put them in their pro series line. What happened there? Are the CVT’s not “pan out” to be as good everybody wished? I only really see them in maybe a few mowers out there now.

I am in the market for a garden tractor and have a couple of questions. I have been looking at the Craftsman pros and also the G5600/20408. Several of the G5600s I have looked at seem to be out of alignment, and also have quite a bit of play in the linkages. I’ve noticed this with several Husqvarnas with the same steering design. Is there a way to adjust the toe in, and/or am I imagining this to be a bigger problem than it is? The alignment issue is pushing me towards the pro mowers. How has the automotive style… Read more »

“Model 27048. 50 inch. 26 HP Kohler 7000 Elite V-twin. K58 Foot Pedal Hydro Trans with Cruise and Locking Rear Differential. Garden Tractor 16″ Turning Radius”

And now that there is no such thing as Sears.ca online, nor retail stores, nor satellite outlets – all gone. . . , do you know where a person in Canada can buy a new Craftsman tractor, particularly the above machine? I live in Cape Breton, NS – Atlantic Canada.

I was given an early 2000’s Craftsman LT1000 by my father in-law and I think it is time to upgrade, even though the thing is still somehow running. I was originally leaning towards the Cub Cadet XT1, but now reading your article here on the Craftsman’s I might be sticking with the brand. I have 3/4 of an acre, slight consistent slope in my front yard from the middle of the lawn to the sidewalk and a relatively flat backyard (with some dips and exposed roots). I primarily want something that I can mulch with through the season and then… Read more »

What are the differences between the Craftsman 46″ 27333 “For the money, the 46 inch model 27333 will go down in history as one of the best cutting – best-priced lawn tractors on the market” and the CraftsmanPro 46″ 27042. There is now a $600 price difference between these two models. Besides the B&S v Kohler enginges, any other notable differences?

Thank you for the update- lot of work and time so thank you.
Question that maybe you can’t answer: every time now i go to the sears website to look at lawn tractor prices they seem to be on a never ending sale much like a used car lot – do you think they will be on a real sale soon or is this the new normal?
thanks

I have narrowed my decision down to the following and hoping you can help tip me one direction or another. 1 acre, mostly flat, some mounds to mow over without scalping, somewhat bumpy lawn in Utah. Always professional mowed in the past and I loved the look. Most important is cut quality and saving some time mowing. Not that may trees or obstacles. Bag in the Spring and Fall for cleanup. Mulch the rest of the time. I would add the mulching kit and bagger to any listed. John Deere 155-I can get this for $900 less than any of… Read more »

I’ve been looking at the Cub Cadet lineup and I noticed the new Craftsman Pro share some parts with the Cubs. I really like the turn tight feature of the Craftsman, but Sears (as usual) does not give full specs on things like transmission and bearings etc. How does the Craftsman Pro 27042 compare with the Cub Cadet XT2 LX46 or XT2 LX46 EFI? The Craftsman is priced right between the two Cubs at the moment. I have a 1 acre yard with many obstacles, but I also plan to pull a cart and potentially use it to clear snow… Read more »

Paul could you tell me what transmission the models that have 54″ deck use? My in-laws have a large yard on a slight slope. Guessing 2 acres if not a bit more. He has an old Ingersoll 4020 which is an absolute beast but is becoming less than reliable.

In the market for a rider and I’m looking at these craftsman models…27330 (T3000), pro 27038, 20381, 27390. I like them all, but just not sure which one I should go with. My main concern is that my entire yard is a hill. I have less than an acre that I mow with this but it is all on a slope, ranging from very subtle up to 14 degrees (measured, not guessed), with the majority of it being 10 degrees. I don’t care much about features or cutting width, my main concern is the best engine/tranny combo for my yard.… Read more »

Thanks there, Paul;
Can you answer this – when you go to sears to see the price they are constantly “on sale” – reminds me of selling cars – do you feel they will be having a real sale soon?

Just a word of warning. While I like the small rear-rider (I have one from 2009-ish?), I have to comment that it does not look like they’ve changed the front wheel/axle. I’ve had my front wheels sheer at the hub several times, so I’ve been forced to keep replacement wheel/tire assemblies as spares.
