Why the best product/price at Amazon?

Poulan Pro can sell these tractors with more features through Amazon because all they have to do is manufacture the lawn tractor and ship it to the Amazon warehouses.  Amazon stores the items, ships the product, handles the money, and sends Poulan Pro a check.  In addition any upfront issues with the product like missing parts or parts broken during shipping are handled with Amazon’s A-Z guarantee. Amazon does not have stores, jobbers, dealers and sales associates to take their cut of the profits.

Note: These models are not available at The Home Depot or on the Poulan Pro website. These models have more features and different model numbers than the tractors sold at The Home Depot.

Poulan Pro is out to change the way you shop for a lawn tractor. It appears Poulan Pro and Amazon have worked together so they can give you the best possible product and still keep the cost lower than the competition.

So what features do these models have that make them special?

Reinforced Deck: You have heard me say this before, “In general stamped decks cut better – fabricated decks last longer.”  Husqvarna has had a solution that until now was only available on their premium models. It is a reinforcement around the bottom of the stamped decks that makes them stronger. This reinforced deck feature is included on all the models at Amazon except the $1099 Model 960420183

No thin, flimsy decks: 13 gauge decks on single cylinder models, 11 gauge decks on V-Twin models. You won’t find a stronger deck in this price range.

10 yr. Limited Warranty on the deck shell: I can’t remember if any brand has ever offered a 10 year warranty on a deck before!

Anti-Scalp Wheels on all models: 2 front wheels on the lawn tractors, 4 anti-scalp wheels on the yard tractors. Even the least expensive models have anti-scalp wheels on the deck.

Hydrostatic or Automatic/CVT: Some of you want the 5.5 mph hydrostatic, others want the 7.5 mph RS 800 CVT. There are models for both tribes.  There is even one model with a fender control.

Ready Start: Some models come with Briggs & Stratton’s no choke-no prime ready start engine. It starts just like your car.

Front

2016 Poulan Pro Yard Tractor

Cast Iron Front Axle: The front axle will last a lifetime and is strong enough to handle a snow blade or snow blower! (Personally I recommend only the V-twin models for a snow blower)

6 Inch Turning Radius! Until this year this option was only available on a Craftsman. This is the 6 inch steering designed for the lawn and yard tractors. It will not give you problems over the years. On all the models at Amazon except the $1099 Model 960420183

Free Shipping: All models are Ship from and sold by Amazon.com. You know how easy it is to deal with Amazon if you ever have a problem with your order.  No third party vendors to deal with.

Accessories: One of the best things about these mowers is Husqvarna and Craftsman (917) accessories work! In other words if you have an old green craftsman with a 42 inch deck – the bagger and blades will work on these 42 inch tractors! The same goes for the 46 in 2 blade, 48 inch and 54 inch decks. Leave a comment with the model number from under the seat and I’ll help you get the right accessories.

If you have read this blog for any length of time you know that there are only four manufactures of lawn tractors. These Poulan Pro tractors are made by the largest manufacture, Husqvarna and have all the features you want without all the glitz and glamor of the major brands. These lawn tractors just mow well. These lawn tractors are just as dependable as the other brands. What’s new for 2016 is they now include the heavy-duty components like reinforced decks, Briggs Ready Start, Kohler 7000 series engines and fast CVT transmissions that make them great lawn tractors at a great price. I highly recommend these to anyone who wants a good, honest lawn tractor.

Are these mowers for you? Three items to consider:

  1. If you can change your own oil, blades and other typical maintenance tasks this is a good choice for you. You can save a lot of money doing your own maintenance not only with labor costs but all the normal parts you may need are available on Amazon. Common parts like oil filters, air filters, and blades are about half the cost of a Craftsman part.

2. Your new mower is shipped to your doorstep in a crate. It will take you 30 minutes to cut open the crate, install the seat, and install the steering wheel. Here is a list of all the tools you will need.

A socket wrench set will make assembly easier. Standard wrench sizes are listed.
Utility knife
Tire pressure gauge
Pliers
(2) 7/16″ wrenches
(2) 1/2″ wrenches
(1) 5/16″ wrench
(1) 9/16″ wrench

If you don’t have these tools but would like a set of good quality, inexpensive tools I put together a list here: Tractor Repair Tools

If you don’t have a set of combination wrenches, are not really mechanically inclined or just don’t have the time to do your own maintenance you will be happier with another brand of mower that is taken out of the crate and assembled by a dealer.

3. If you have a rough lawn, old lawn, or a lawn converted from a field these tractors are a great choice and will give you a great cut and the best traction. Why? The frames used in these mowers have just a little “flex.”  This allows the tractor to bend just a little when going through dips and over bumps. It has better traction than the rigid framed lawn tractors on rough lawns. This small amount of flex also helps the deck cut consistently through the dips and bumps without digging ruts or scalping.  No, these frames do not crack and break over the years.

2106 Poulan Pro Lawn Tractor

2106 Poulan Pro Lawn Tractor

So, If your lawn is “normal” these tractors are a great choice. They give you a great cut without scalping or digging into the lawn. If you want a perfect cut though and if you live in a sub-division where your lawn was smoothed with construction equipment and sodded a John Deere, Craftsman Pro or Cub Cadet will give you a better cut. (Consumer Reports testing field is very smooth)

Note: Consumer Reports has not tested the Poulan Pro lawn tractors sold through Amazon. The only Poulan Pro they have tested is the Model 960460077 sold at Home Depot.  They rated it lower than I would have expected because of “ease of use.” They are not specific but I would guess they rated it lower because the model they tested had the 16 inch radius steering and did not have cruise control. They rated the side discharge and mulching as good as the top rated $3200, John Deere X350. They also stated it does not have a washout port – but it does.

Note: If you do need warranty work there are thousands of authorized service centers and you should have no problems finding one close to you. Here is the Poulan Pro Service Locator. I highly recommend you register your new lawn tractor here. Product Registration Page

Note: I’ve compared the description at Amazon to the actual parts list for each mower so the description here and on Amazon is accurate. I compared it using the model number and Poulan Pro User Manuals Page

Note: The other Poulan Pro Tractors listed on Amazon are last years models or units sold by a third party. The tractors in this article come directly through Amazon and are shipped and sold by them.

Poulan Pro has always been the Rodney Dangerfield of the Lawn & Garden world.  It’s always been a good dependable brand but it never got the respect of the other brands. Why? Because dealers have always considered it their second line. Dealers would have a line like Simplicity or Cub Cadet and then have one or two of the cheaper Poulan Pro’s on the sales floor. I can’t remember ever walking in and seeing the full line of Poulan Pro tractors sitting on a sales floor. PPGT2654 Well, Poulan Pro is out to change that. Starting right now you can select the Poulan Pro that fits you best at a price that is $100 to $300 less than comparable models and it will be shipped free right to your garage/front door. All you have to do is take it out of the crate, check the tire pressure and put gas in it. Hey maybe you can help. Looking to buy a Poulan riding mower. All the backs for each mower seems to be the same. I have an older craftsman 3 bin bagger 917.249890. The chute fits the deck fine but the attachment for the bagging unit goes on the outside of the back of the unit between the tires. There is a bolt there that seems to be in the same place as my old craftsman but not out far enough to put on the unit. Seems like I could just get a longer bolt and put a nut on each… Read more »

Paul, Thanks for this great site, it has been very helpful to me. I have recently moved from Arizona (no Lawn, desert scaping) to Northeast Ohio (1/2+ acre of Lawn). After reading your website i purchased a Poulan Pro 96042016701 from Sears outlet for around 1200$ new. It has the single cylinder Kohler, and the RS800 CVT transmission. Now i started thinking about snow plowing and if i should use this to remove snow from my concrete driveway using the Husqvarna 588181302 48″ Plow. Husqvarna says that it is for mowers with Tex style frames. Do you think it is… Read more »

My 2003 Craftsman GT5000 (917.276010) Garden Tractor (6 speed, 48″ 3-blade mower deck, 25 HP Kohler V-Twin) seems to be on its last legs and I’m looking for a replacement, but I’m gripped with analysis paralysis. I live in New Hampshire where we mostly seem to grow rocks and tree roots. My 2.5 acre lot is very wooded with 100-foot tall pine trees, a good number of oak and assorted other trees. I mow about 1.5-1.75 acres of the lot. The tractor with the 3 bin “bagger” has been a huge help in getting all of those leaves and pine… Read more »

Paul, I do appreciate the information that you give on this website as well as all the work, etc, involved in doing such a website. I may not be able to wait for your reply since I need to replace a mower very soon, but I would be interested in your answer anyway. I am very interested in the Poulan Pro riding mower. I also appreciate the advantages of the models that are on Amazon. But I find myself kind of stuck. I really would like a 42″ deck for storage and manuverability in tighter places. However, the Amazon models… Read more »

I bought a pp155g42 poulan pro. This mower does not expel the grass as it should, it plugs very easily and very often leaving piles of grass all over
Is this from the design of the deck or do you know?

Thank you Paul. Sounds like too much work/expense for me. I ll look at the wheel weights as a solution to compensate for the small rear tires, large deck, and light rear end. Take care, Tom

Hi I bought the 960460080 PP24VA54 model about 6 weeks ago. It is a good machine for me so far. I have installed the mulching kit. I m getting ready to install a front bumper and wheel weights- the rear end is very light and the rear tires a bit small. Could I actually fit the larger rear tires/wheels from the GT model on this tractor without a lot of work? Thank you, Tom

Paul,
Yesterday I saw some of these Poulan Pro riders at the local Sears Outlet. They were brand new 46″ units with solid cast iron front axle, the Kohler engine and Hydro pedals without the yellow grill inserts. Think they were $2200 retail marked down to $1699. Is that a good deal?

Paul,
Great site! Very informative, thanks. Need a simple mower for 1 acre, moderate slope. Need to clean up some debris, too, so moderate hauling capability is necessary. Looking at Poulan Pro 48″ on Amazon ($1800), Craftsman 20442 at local Sears ($2300, inc tax), and John Deere D140 at local Lowe’s ($1900, inc tax). Just want something dependable that’ll last a long time. I’m 6’4″ if that makes any difference. Thoughts? Thanks again.

Paul, Poulan Pro versus Kubota BX25D? I have 8 acres that I have finally cleared of scrub cedars (ash Junipers) over the years. It is a single flat top hill with about a 35′ drop from highest to lowest point (over about a 500′ run), but no super steep grades. It is not planted turf grass, but rather a mix of native buffalo grass, a native ‘Bermuda’ grass that is similar to ‘coastal’ Bermuda,, and native sedums and weeds, as it is xeriscaped by necessity. I have cleared most of the stumps and rocks, and I can mow all of… Read more »

Hi Paul,
Love the site. Do you know what’s the story on the 960420188? Amazon site says it is currenty not available and I can’t find that model listed on Poulan Pro’s website. It looks like the Poulan Pro site only list the models available at Home Depot. The Home Depot model is PP20VA46. The specs are very similiar on both machines, 20hp, 46in deck but there appear to be some sublte differences. Curious if Poulan Pro is only producing the Home Depot models now?

Do you know the difference between the PP22VH46 and the Husqvarna YTH22V46? I was looking at the Craftsman 25583 as well, but would like something with a reinforced deck because I have a ton of concrete flower beds. For 2016 the Husqvarna has the 6″ turn radius. It also has cruise control which the Poulon doesn’t seem to. I’m leaning towards the Husqvarna because I have an old Ariens that my dealer would take in trade saving me the time of selling it.

Hi Paul – I have a relatively flat front yard that’s about 1/4 acre and about 1/2 acre back yard with a steep slope away from the house. The back yard also has several uneven areas (dips/ditches) where the yard flattens out at the bottom and is a little rough in places (roots, etc). Due to the slope of the hill (and a retaining wall at the top of the hill), I need to mow some of it perpendicular to the slope (w/a little sailboat-style lean as I’m cutting across the hill). I currently have a JD LT155 w/42 inch… Read more »

Paul – I bought the H42 model and my question is around the Mulch kit. Do you need to replace the blades or can you just put the mulch cover on? What is the difference in the blades? Thanks.

Paul, I have been mowing my 1/2 to 3/4 acre yard with a push mower for the last 3 years while researching a lawn tractor. I have read a lot of your posts and articles during that time, but this is my first post. My yard is really bumpy. The septic system was replaced right before we bought the house and they didn’t put down any topsoil. I have spent hours trying to find and remove all the large rocks just below the surface. I also have a number of black walnut trees so part of my yard gets covered… Read more »

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the awesome information. I just bought a house in Indiana that has about 3/4 acre and got the 960420182 model. From reading your other comments, that should be a good fit for my needs.

Thanks!

Hello Paul, great site and information. I have a Poulan Pro Model # PP19A42 that I purchased from Home Depot last month. I have about an acre of flat land. My problem is that there is a grinding noise that has developed and it sounds like its coming from the deck area. The noise was not prevalent when it was new, but now it seems it getting louder and louder as time goes by. The tractor does not make the noise with the parking brake set, but only when its running and stationary. The blade is not engaged. I’m thinking… Read more »

Yep that was why the Chat manager at Sears.com had me print out the whole transcript of our conversation and told me to take it to the Huge Mall Anchor sears store in my area so I could get my veteran discount. The manager at the store refused to honor the Transcript and the price and flat out and wouldn’t talk to me anymore, very rude!
Anyway water under the bridge right now, I’ll report back after the mower is delivered on the 31st
Thanks,
Greg

Hi Paul. Great site and service! I’m looking to replace my 13 year old 50″ Simplicity Broadmoor riding mower. I personally rebuilt the K46 transmission a couple of years ago, but it seems I’m spending more time than I like repairing various things, e.g., the PTO clutch switch, drive belt, deck belts, deck spindles. I wouldn’t be surprised if the engine has problems in the next few years. The area I cut includes: 1. about 1-1.5 acres around the house, about half of which is relatively flat but with a fair amount of bumps and dips in places and the… Read more »

Why is the 920460482 listed at 1299 on your site and is 1599 on the Amazon site

hey paul,

great site! even with all your recommendations and advice, i still find myself undecided. i am trying to decide between a poulan pro from amazon, or home depot, a craftsman, and a cub cadet. i would prefer to stay in the 1500-1800 range and would like to mow 2-3 acres of relatively flat ground. what would you recommend?

Hi Paul, I received my mower today 960420184 — it took me a while to uncrate it — but I did it. Yaaay! My problem though is that it won’t start up, well that’s an understatement – it actually won’t even try to crank up. No noise, no nothing. I tested the battery and it has power and the wires connected to it appear to be receiving power. The strange thing is that the headlights won’t even light up. Have I missed something or do I have a problem here? Thank you!

Hi Paul, Thanks for this amazing site – I am learning so much going through all your posts. I can’t imagine how much time this takes you. We are moving to almost 100 acres; 30 acres leased in corn/beans, 2 large ponds (12 acres?), about 45 acres in woods. There are 5 acres along the driveway and around the house and ponds, some of which has some slope and rough ground, plus a 5 acre paddock that is usually mowed twice a year. After reading voraciously on your site (plus other research) I was leaning towards the Craftsman Pro 54″… Read more »

Paul, very nice site and info. Could you help me with a recommendation for a lawn tractor? Currently reside in Indiana with a little over half an acre of mostly flat zoysia grass. I do have some plastic landscape borders with gentle curves. Currently I rake up the clippings from my inexpensive push mower because I don’t like the way they look. Looking to spend $1400-$1800, and am looking at the Poulan Pro 20188 model, the Husqvarna YTA22V46, or the Craftsman 42″ Fast Auto 25581. Sears and Lowes are nearby, and I have Amazon Prime. My gate opening is 48″… Read more »

Hi Paul,

I just ordered the Poulan Pro 960420184 from Amazon. They had two in stock so I pulled the trigger. There is one left if anyone else wants one! Just wondering what mulch kit I would need with it? And also is the #960730024 bagger the correct bagger for that mower?

I really appreciate your site, I have done quite a bit of research on here and glad I came across this article. I think it is one of the better deals out there. I like not paying sales tax too!

Paul,
I live on less than an acre. I do have a couple of decent size hills and the terrain is a little bumpy. I am looking at two mowers. The craftsman 42″ 20373 17.5 B&S gold, or the poulan pro 42″ 19hp B&S (Home Depot). They are the same price. I am looking for a quality mower that will last. I have never heard from anyone I know that has a poulan, but they seem to get great reviews. I enjoy your articles and would like some guidance on what your thoughts are. I look forward to hearing back

Paul great site! I am in the market for a new mower for a house that I am going to purchase. Total lawn size is about 5 acres, and relatively flat. I have my mind set on a 54 in deck as the yard is massive with very few obstacles. The tractor will have to also do double duty as snow blower as I am in upstate NY and the driveway is about 500 ft long, so no zero turns. Plus I will be pulling a small utility trailer around the property from time to time. Poulan Pro’s PP24VA54 offering… Read more »

Help please! I don’t know how to email so I’ll just post here. This is my first tractor for half an acre (right now, maybe more later, but can’t justify a garden tractor which is my end game. For now, replacing a walk behind mower I used, but now pay for a service 100/month. I’d like to get 15 years out of this, and not a mechanic by any stretch, but handy and figure I can handle some maintenance (so I’m concerned about hydrostatic transmission, and think the CVT may be a better long templar from a cost/Maintainance perspective. My… Read more »

Hi Paul, I ordered a Poulan Pro 960420185 weeks ago based on the advice you’d given others, though I’m still waiting for it to ship. I’m in Windham, Maine on 8 acres, 3-4 of which I’d mow. It’s a long, continuous slope with fairly rough terrain. Reliability and durability are much more important to me than a perfect-looking lawn. Do you think I went with an appropriate choice and is it worth waiting a bit longer or is there something comparable I might find right away? Also, how far am I off from a machine that could plow a small… Read more »

Hi Paul, Thanks again for answering all my endless emails. I can’t thank you enough. I went down today to SEARS and bought the 46 inch Craftsman Pro 20442 and the bagger. Its on sale right now at $1999.00 and the bagger was on sale too for $329.00. Free Delivery too. They also gave me interest free for 18 months on the SEARS card. The guy wanted to sell me the 3 year protection. I said no and he spoke to his manager and took $200.00 off the mower and gave me a bagger in a ripped box that was… Read more »

Thanks again Paul.

Maybe the 171 could pull something like the Acre Ease pull behind mower and that could take care of my taller grass?

You are a great help by the way.

Hi Paul, with your advice, I just purchased the Poulan Pro 960420184 which is pending shipment via Amazon. I would like your advice about the 1 and 2 year Lawn & Garden Extended Warranty Protection Plans offered with these machines on Amazon, by SquareTrader. What’s your advice on extended warranties for these riding mowers? Do you ever buy the extended warranties? I do understand that not much is as it use to be (old school here) – but are these riders typically pretty mechanically sound? I generally don’t buy optional insurance, but I’ve never dealt with a riding mower before…… Read more »

What is the correct operation of the free-wheel engaged/disengaged on Poulan Pro (PP20VA46) Just had my PP20VA46 (the HD version) delivered yesterday and have a question about the free-wheel engaged/disengaged rod. It took exactly one week from in-store order to delivery. The delivery was curb side and was going push the tractor up the driver (about 200 feet, 5% incline), but I ended up driving it up the driveway. Should the freewheel rod at the back of the tractor stay fixed/locked when in disengaged position? Are there two discrete position engaged AND disengaged for the freewheel wheel? When I pull… Read more »

Hello I have about 2+ acres of bumpy fairly flat ground. Some of it is semi wild. I have a budget of $2,000 approx.. Am leaning towards the Poulan Pro 960420188, Want a yard or garden tractor.
Have heard quite a bit of negative things about Craftman over the years. Bad service, cheaper than they used to be.

Any thoughts?

Thank you very much

OK , Just read all the posts and I am now more confused, I have a John Deere L120 that has been a lemon since day 1, the “Tuff Torque K46″ just died, the tractor has less than 350 hours, I have gone through 3 power take off, several wire harness and repair kits for the PTO’s, a complete steering gears replacement, deck spindles, and a slew of small parts. I have 2 acres of sloped lawns and lots of turns. I pull a small old Craftsman trailer with firewood, gravel soil etc. I do not want anything K46 again,… Read more »

New to your website, but it has been very informative. My new house in a semi-rural Maryland subdivision has about 0.7 acres of lawn, which takes me a good 2 hours on my self propelled push mower, so I’m dying to get a riding mower. One side of house is very steep so I need to keep using the push mower, but the other 90% of the lawn is fairly smooth with very gentle sloping. I will also need to use the push mower to mow against the fence in our back yard and around our playground set. I’ve always… Read more »

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the great site! I was decided on the 20442 Craftsman until this post. Now I am torn between the two 46in deck models of Poulan Pros.

I have a 3/4 acre yard with a circle driveway that wraps behind the house that I am looking to use the snow plow attachment for light snow in the winter. With that said, which would be ideal? the 20hp w/ CVT or 22hp w/ Hydro?

Or should I stick with 20442? Thanks!

HI Paul, I’m looking to replace my 2002 John Deere LT150 (15 HP 38″ deck). We bought it brand new back in 2002. At the time we had 1/2 an acre. 3 years we moved and now have 1.2 acres (in a development that use to be an old corn field). It takes me about 2 hours to cut and another 20 – 30 minutes to trim. I’m looking to significantly reduce that time. The Poulan Pro 960420186 (24 HP 54″ deck) seems like a great deal. I was also considering a ZTR. I have 3 small trees, a fenced… Read more »

Good day, Was looking through all the different mower articles and yours really stood out for the honesty of the reviews and how well they were received by people. That’s being said, I am looking to purchase a mower to take care of our “yard”. The front is small and has a couple trees and fence to contend with. The back, however, is about 3 acres of what has only been field mowed (prior to us). There is some small incline (10-20) and some rough ground. I don’t intend on using the tractor for heavy garden work but would like… Read more »

Hey Paul, Thanks for all the great info. I just came across this site. I just purchased a home on about .5 acre. It’s a little more than I care do with a push. It took me about 1.5 hours to do with a push. It’s an older yard in suburban Chicago with minor bumps and roots, but its level(no slopes). I have 6 large trees and a few smaller to work around. I’d like to be able to mulch and bag leaves in the fall. I’d like to stay around or under $1500. The Poulan Pro 960420182 42″ looks… Read more »

I am so aggravated trying to find a lawn tractor! I have an Ariens with a Kohler engine that backfires every time its shut off for 3 years and is now burning oil and about to die so I don’t want a Kohler engine again. I can’t find a fender mounted lever driven tractor, only pedal drive. I also have a 2012 Craftsman YT3000 21 HP that has suddenly stopped spinning the blades fast enough to actually cut the grass so it’s a giant paperweight. So now I’m looking at the Poulan P2va46 and I hope it lasts me more… Read more »
