Craftsman, MTD, Troy-Bilt 420cc Engine Drain Plug Removal
There have been thousands of these engines sold in the Craftsman 25000, 29000 riders, 28882 Lawn Tractors and Troy-Bilt TBR 30R.
5 or 6 of you have had a problem removing the oil drain plug.
MTD is very committed to helping each and every owner of their products and products they manufacture for Craftsman so they put together these pictures just for TodaysMower. Thanks Tara!

Be careful and push the extention all the way into the plug. This way you won’t break the end off your extention.
Oil Drain
IMPORTANT: Be sure to check engine on a level surface with the engine stopped.
Drain the oil while the engine is still warm to assure rapid and complete draining.
For draining oil from the engine’s crankcase of select model tractors, a plastic oil
drain sleeve is packed with the Operator’s Manual. To drain the oil, proceed as
follows:
1. Unscrew the oil fill cap and remove the dipstick from the oil fill tube.
2. Snap the small end of oil drain sleeve onto the engine below the drain plug.
3. Remove drain plug and drain oil into a suitable container with a capacity of
no less than 64 oz. (2 quarts)

Hello,
I have a Craftsman Rear engine riding mower Model No 247.290000 and am looking to buy an oil drain tube. The size of this item is 3/8,” I need to know the size of the oil drain plug on my mower before I purchase this drain tube. Thank you for any information you can provide.
The part number of the drain plug is: 710-05311
Paul
Hi Bruce, Figure out how long of a drain tube you want. Then take your plug to a hardware store and match it up to pipe. You may want to buy an 90 degree elbow and a new plug.
Gregg
What size is the extension rachet? 3/8″ is too small and 1/2″ is too big. They don’t make a 7/16?
Paul
Hi Gregg, The drain plug in the Craftsman 25000, 29000 riders, 28882 Lawn Tractors and Troy-Bilt TBR 30R uses a 1/4 inch socket extension. I don’t have any information on other models.
