Here is a quick list of Oil, Oil Filters, Air Filters, Fuel Filters and Spark Plugs for the current Briggs & Stratton Lawn Tractor Engines. This includes the John Deere 100 Series, Briggs Intek, Briggs Intek Plus, Briggs Pro, Craftsman Gold, Craftsman Platinum and Husqvarna Endurance engines.
Oil Filter Note: When in doubt always use the Yellow Filter. Do Not use the black filter with the yellow label on a full-pressure engine. In general only use the Black Filter on the Craftsman Gold and Briggs Intek series. Use the yellow filters for all other Briggs & Stratton lawn tractor engines.

And what pn would it be if i can
Paul Sikkema
@Shayne, I now have 2 Husqvarna Rider 970’s myself. I took the deck off one and my wife uses it for her yard cart and loves it!
Yes, you can always move up to the yellow filter on a Briggs. Here is the link to it on Amazon: Briggs & Stratton 696854 Oil Filter Replacement for Models 79589, 92134GS, 92134 and 695396. You can search for your other parts there. Just put in your part number in the Amazon search box. Get the order over $35 and you get free shipping. You can save a lot!

Paul, just a quick update. Sears came out looked at it and said he didn’t have a switch with him. He called in and I had him ship it straight to me. I received it in a couple of days, installed it and was back up and running. The list price was around $350 for the switch! Of course this was warranty so no charge and was all very easy and painless. If I had to load it and take it somewhere it would have been a real pain. Nice setup with the Sears warranty.

Thanks Paul. I think I’ll play it safe and use the correct filter. Not a big money difference and too much to risk. By the way I love my Craftsman garden tractor,54 ” deck, but I just had a problem this week with the complete start. The start button is not working. It lights up but doesn’t accept input..makes a click but doesn’t register. Called Sears and they are sending a tech tomorrow. Hopefully just an oddity. Thanks again.

@Gil, I too hope it’s just an odd one. That new starting system is on about a dozen different models of Husqvarna built tractors and zero-turns.

Hi Paul. I really enjoy your site and have learned a lot. I actually purchased the Craftsman Garden Tractor based on your reviews. I didn’t realize at the time that you made money if I went through your links so I am trying to make sure anything else I purchase goes through you if possible. Anyhow, the last time I was in the local auto parts store the salesman said he could save me some money on oil filters by cross referencing it into say a fram or purolator he had in stock. What are your thoughts on that?
Paul Sikkema
@Gil, I used Fram filters on my Kohler motors for years until I had a plugged filter that ruined the motor. It wasn’t the filter’s fault. I left it on too long. It was my fault because I didn’t know that the Kohler was a full-pressure motor and that if the filter plugged I lost all lubrication in the engine.
If you are going to use an aftermarket filter make sure that the filter meets the requirements of your engine. For example Briggs Intek Plus, Briggs Pro, and Craftsman Platinum all have to have a filter with a bypass valve. They should also have an anti-drainback valve so the oil doesn’t run out of the filter and cause an airlock in the oil pump. The Balwin B7165, Spin-On is the only aftermarket filter with the correct specs. I highly recommend Baldwin Filters for any application.
If you have an Intek or Craftsman Gold it doesn’t matter what filter you use. The oil filter is not part of the oil circulation so it doesn’t need a bypass.
Don’t trust the guy behind the counter to tell you. Ask to see the written specs. The written specs have to state – The Anti-Drainback Valve, Front End By-Pass Valve
Finally, If the price is too cheap ….. When all the filters are $13 and the counter guy wants to sell you one for $5 ……
