A good tiller is a must-have tool if you have a garden. A tiller is used for more than just breaking up the soil and preparing the seedbed for planting. It can be used for weeding, hoeing, plowing or crumbling hard clay. By breaking the soil into smaller pieces, tillers prevent weed growth and improves soil aeration. Tillers loosen the ground to allow crop roots to develop quickly, grow faster and deeper which means less watering. A tiller is very useful in the fall to mix compost into the garden for the next year. You can even use a tiller to chew up leaves grasses and other organics to make compost or mulch.
I’ve been using tillers since the 60’s and I used just about every type from every manufacturer over the years. I hate front tine tillers. Chain drive rear tine tillers wear out quickly. Gear drive, rear tine tillers last the longest. The Troy-Bilt Horse/Big Red is the best built and longest lasting gear drive tiller still available. Yes, they do make them like they used to. Myself, I don’t have a vegetable garden anymore but when I do need a tiller for tearing up sod to make a new flowerbed or renewing a landscape area I either borrow my neighbor’s 1972 Troy-Bilt Horse or rent a Troy-Bilt Bronco from the hardware store. If I needed to buy a new tiller today Troy-Bilt would be the ONLY brand I looked at. Troy-Bilt currently has a free shipping offer. Check out the advertisement from Troy-Bilt Tillers below. |
